this is the creation of damien o’neill of sydney, the result of a fascination and total love affair with spoons against all odds. where will you find a more detailed, articulate chronicle of greenough’s progression of thought? and excellent pics. text by paul gross–his clarity and style are unreal. i think most of the content’s new, too. nice job by both of them and a real service to the surfing community.

Mi Mark -

Indeed, great stuff. Paul Gross is a fantastic writer as well as a skilled craftsman/artist.

Any idea what is meant by the “2000 debacle” as it references the point at which Paul apparently ceased taking orders for spoons?

John…probably related to the handful of kneeboard spoons he made for way too cheap around that time. He musta forgot the amount of work that it takes to make a proper flex spoon. Paul would never compromise on the intended outcome and he ended up making little $ for his efforts.

There are a few stoked spoon owners who got a great deal. One of the Malloy brothers ended up with one and was seen ripping a (better left unsaid) Calif. point earlier this winter.

Roger

what’s with the big piece of wood down the middle in the Edgespoon – 2006 file??

With nothing but “shell” in the middle, when you glass them there is strong possibility of warpage. That has to be a rocker template, likely hot glued to the shell to hold it until the resin is cured. That way, you end up with what you shaped

sounds about right to me…THANKS!

Hey John,

as proneman said, paul made a half dozen or so beautiful velo replicas that year. buddy mccray, the amazing shaper of blast kneeboards-hawaii, was the one who set the whole project up through his website. i’m sure he was surprised by the weak response. too bad–it was a jewel of an offer, especially in hindsight.

i corresponded with paul a bit at that time because i was interested in the details but couldn’t pull together the $1500 he was asking (justifiably). found him to be very friendly and generous.

“debacle”, tho? i never heard anything negative.

did you know malloy had said he might show up at the dale on his pg velo?

You’re actually looking at the mold, it’s a spine to keep the rocker correct. -Carl

i think the debacle was the amount of time spent per board(about 80-100 hours each! , including fin layup and foiling all one at a time) at the time 1500 seemed a bit high (to the buyer) but having watched PG make a few of 'em it was painfully apparent that 1500 was not enough for his time and expertise…
