Thought I would post up a source for veneer that I recently bought from. This is porbably a good source for guys on the West Coast USA. I bought a 4'x10' sheet (roll) of paper backed alder veneer for a non surfboard related cabinet project. They also had the same product available with no backing. It was shipped UPS. Ordered online before noon on one day and delivered the next day. Including the shipping $134. Appears to be of excellent quality, consistent color and grain and no cracking. They have a wide variety of woods on their website. Will post up the link later. Looks like it would work well for surfboards.
hey mcding
could you mic it and give us the thickness?
Thanks for sharing. Always good to have options. They seem a little pricey. Their cost for fiddleback maple (heavy figure) was almost double what I paid for at certainlywood.com. Certainlywood also has photos of the exact flitch you’re ordering so you know pretty much what the wood is going to look like. That is important to me. Ideally I’d like to look at and match veneers in person but if that is not possible it’s nice to have a photo of what you’re getting.
Here it is. www.glveneer.com
They have very nice stuff. Yes, a bit pricey
Ken says 10 mm with the paper backing. I don't own a mic. but i guess if i am going to do any veneer or hang around with wood guys I better buy one. Do they sell them at Harbor Freight? Lowel
10mm that cant be right thats about 7/16"
maybe .10mm
mines about .025 to .030" with paper
like two sheets of construction paper or one plastic buisness card
Yeah it must be .10 mm. I'll double check it tonite. It's about as thick as a business card. About the same flexability as well. "Now I know why they don't sell guns in Malls".
seems a little on the high side
these guys below have some deals every once and a while.
I picked up some cypress and tulip wood sheets from them awhile back that I haven't even opened the box yet

But the GL Veneer store does have a killer deal on a special super secret wood that it seems only Charlie was clued in on and that's Obeche. At
When first saw the name GL Veneer I thought Greg was cornering the veneer market as well as the epoxy market for his new timberflex patent.. ;-)
Kind of getting over the whole wood surfboard phenomena these days and getting more into actual turning wood on a lathe. Much more rewarding and way faster to create something of beauty. and of course there's the smell of slicing into a block of hardwood with a carbide tool.
oneula Welcome to turning. I have been turning since about 1975. Used to sell in stones gallery. Got into trouble with a repeatative motion injury from production turning and had to stop for a couple years but I am back turning one of a kinds. Love the smell of fresh turned camphor wood. Whenever I get to Oahu I like to stop by Martin and MCArthur they always have some good lookers there. Used to have a couple good freinds lived Ewa side when I was working in Camble.
I know the project I used this veneer on is not "surf related" but the application is similar. I applied this veneer on a flat to radius, similar to a deck or bottom transitition to rail. Using contact cement. It wrapped real good. No cracking etc. I can see that it could be vacked to a rail midpoint pretty easy.
