Glass Layering

I’m making a board with #1 EPS, which makes it necessary to have 2 layers of glass on the bottom. I was planning on doing a resin swirl on the bottom, and read somewhere that it was easier to do on just one layer of glass instead of two. It will be the first layer and wrap all the way around to the rails.

Do I wrap the next clear layer to the first cutlap or do I stop at the rail apex? And if I wrap it to the cutlap, won’t that create a pretty high ridge when I glass the top layers?

Thanks

You can either taper the cut of the second layer or sureform taper both layers after it’s cured.

Hey Rachel,

When I use two layers of glass for my deck etc… i cut the first layer to just starting to go up onto the rail… Say if you put your scissors right next to the board and go right around, so the first layer will just start to wrap over the rail.

Second layer i do full over rail onto deck like normal. Hasn’t caused any lines or bumps for me…

I think you will gain more strength if you wrap both layers totally over the rail…

Maybe try lap the first layer further than the second, so it sorta creates steps, and you can sand down easily, and have both laps over the rail. If you get what i mean…

Cheers

Ant

Rachael,

I did a resin swirl on 2 layers of 6oz on my first 1lb EPS. I didn’t think it was hard to do, but then I think my rails got a little muddy. What really freaked me out was doing the 3 top 6oz layers all at once - came out OK, so no worries from now on.

Its in the resources - a 6’ 11" teardrop if you want to check it out.

To me, when it comes to rail laps… The more the merrier. Seems to me most dings are there, and the compounding of the curves on the rail adds strength. I’ve been known to knock down the real high stuf on the laps, and then feather the ridge w/spakle. Looks funky, but works so smooth and easy… But that’s just me. keep up the work - Taylor. Ps. it’s good to get a female on this site, so please let us know how it all goes.
