Glass on fins angle

hello,

can anyone advise me on a issue i have.

i use pe resin not epoxy.
i got some glass on fins and i want to glass them angled at 5 degrees but the base of the fins is flat.

when i first lay them on the board what can i do to make them stick at the desired angle.

cheers and good waves.

Maybe sand the bottom of the fin to the angle, cut some pieces of wood at the angle and use tape and 5-minute epoxy to set the toe-in and angle and let cure. Then glass on the rest of the way and check beffore all cures. Some people just use a lot of tape.

well this is as visual as it gets.
cheers .

i guess also put some resin on the base of the fin before taping?

cheers

I believe Greg Loehr used a glue gun to hold glass on fins in place for lamination (see his Epoxy 101 glassing video).

hello Mr. Stoneburner.

do you think the PE resin will afect the glue or create some reaction, color alteration etc…?

this because where i live i can’t use epoxy it’s way too expensive. ( 1,5 kg epoxy = 5 kg PE resin in price)

cheers and good wave

I could not say because I have never done glass on fins. And I haven’t used PE resin in decades.
Simple to test with glue gun glue and PE resin on some scrap materials.

Yes, at 7:50 in the video it shows adding some resin whiles taped and quickly jumps to removing tape, with the initial resin cured at that point so the tape is no longer needed.

Use a hot glue gun, tack them into place and glass as usual. Just a dab of hot glue is all you need. if the angle is wrong, snap it off and reset. The lam resin will seep under any gaps and make it all pretty. glass with fin rope and 2-3 football shaped glass patches, hot coat and sand.

cheers and good waves.

FYI, glass the fins on after lam glass…then hot coat the whole thing.

thanks for the help.

cheers and goos waves.

ended up doing it this way , turned out good, cheers and good waves.

measured and they are correct!

please share your opinion with me on the positioning!

the board is 6.8 x 22 x 2 1/4

back of fin at 8 inches, toe in is 1 1/4, and the cant angle is 6 deegres.

is it too much cant angle? should the fins be further?

they are xl fins with a 5 inch base.
