glass on wood fins

I’m shaping my first board, a mini simmons for my sons, and I’ve searched the archives for this question but I haven’t found what I’ve been looking for.  I am going to make wood keel fins, out of birch plywood.  My question is do I have to glass the fins before I set them.  I was planning on making the fins, setting them, then placing the fin rope, then two layers of glass.  Is that a good way to do it, or should I glass them first before setting them on the board?  If this has already been answered in the archives can someone point me in the right direction.  Thanks

yea you want to glass both sides of the fin before glassing to the board, thats how i do it. then i tack it on with either a thick mix of some q cell or 5 minute epoxy, fin rope the base, then a layer on both sides, hotcoat, sand and surf!

There are several ways to skin this cat.  One way is what Wind_n_surf suggested.

Also, check out this video. Half way through the video they show you how to glass on a plywood fin with roving halo. He makes it look a million times easier than it is.

Answer to your next question…1/4’’ plywood for single foil and 3/8’’ plywood for double.

I glass them before installing to the board, but that was a cool video, warrior 1515. Liked the music. Bare handed, too.  Probably not married.  Mike
