START NOW! any one out there want a full time job glassing surfboards? 30+plus a week room to grow to 50p/w. paid weekly.no begginers, the better you are the more ill pay you! its on the gold coast , in australia so you will need an ABN and a Tax file no. contact me on(07)55984848 or 0419246595.

same story everywhere …all the good glassers and sanders are are dieing breed …for the last 4 years ive struggled to find good staff …a few years back a friend had a massive 1,100 board order for japan and 14 weeks to do it , he was desperate for help at the last minute so i agreed to help out with some sanding …i was making 500 a day just sanding boards …almost started thinking about working for others after that…

but na! i enjoy my freedom to much now .nothing worse than being totally surfed out, then having to go and sand 10 boards at night…

good luck finding someone good dave…

regards

BERT

Yeah it is a dying breed, To bad your not stateside dave Im looking to find a bigger account myself, aside from whats produced just in this factory.

hey dave where can you see the manufacturing side of things going in 5-10 years. i mean now with a computer that can shape a blank, including the rails. maybe glassing will be the next thing to go computerised. there doesnt seem too be many people coming through to fill the increased demand these days. it could go like the building industry in QLD where you cant get a house built for 6 months because there are not enough builders to fill demand. maybe they should get some sort of training program going.

Sea, please post your details on your information section, then i will know who im replying too and how to reply!

you said “maybe they should get some sort of training program going.” who is they? … do you want a job?

dave

i put my email up on my profile. unfortunately i am probably unemployable from your perspective, i dont have any commercial experience in glassing or shaping. i have shaped my own boards on and off for the last few years, pretty much self taught by trial and error. the training program thing was just an idea i had, as someone who would have an interest in learning about the little tricks and technicalities involved in shaping/glassing surfboards. most shapers just dont go handing out their information to any person who walks in the factory door, which is understandable. i think the surfboard industry has always been a little bit of a closed shop, if you dont know anyone you dont get in. however they are starting to pay the price for that now with the increase in demand and not enough workers to go around.

maybe some of the old boys who know their shit could get together and put a course on for people who are interested in shaping/glassing/ding repair. im sure there would be alot of surfers out there who would be into it, you just have to look at the amount of traffic coming through swaylocks to see the interst is there. when i look at what some of those glassers are doing with resin tints for takayama, mctavish, cooperfish ect. its a skill that came back recently and im just guessing here, but id say its the older glassers who have been around for years who are doing those boards. when those glassers leave the industry they may or may not have passed that skill onto a few other people.

hay dude, I aggree totally. I havn’t been doing it for “decades” but long enugh to get a good job done. Like you I am mainley self taught but am willing to share the info with anyone! If you know anyone in the S.F. bay area ca. I would be willing to teach (for a nominal fee) anyone that is genuinely interested. show the basics and the rest is up to them. its all we can do to keep an “exclusive craft/art” from dieing out or becoming so exclusive that we have to pay through the nose (or some other oraface) to have it done.

well…the offer is out now…" I would be willing to teach (for a nominal fee) anyone that is genuinely interested"…any takers?

cheers.

I have a local crew that I met for the first time last night. They went through the ropes of glassing with me, and next week I get to watch the shape a board. I would have been willing to pay for “lessons” if I could have afforded it. I did order the glassing 101 video.

BTW how much is your “nominal” fee? That way atleast people know what to expect.

Rodney

its not “industry perfect” but if you shape a board bring it over and I will charge $60 over mtl cost. (glass being about $5.50 pr yrd and resin $35per gal or so plus gloves, spreaders and brushes etc.)

includes laming and hot coat (not sanding…you can figure that out on yer own…its not hard).

fin boxes I use are “futures” and I trace the out line and “free” rout the cavitys.

like I said its not “industry perfect” but its been working for me and Im willing at least to show you and let you go “hands on” for a major part of it.

sorry if I “dissed” anyone …i did not meen to.

cheers.

p.s. you supply yer own resperator.

M

I don’t think you dissed anyone. I just wanted to see what you were offering. Like I said, I would have paid to watch. I didn’t glass my own board, but just watched them glass another fellows board and asked some questions. I feel really lucky these guys were so nice to take me in. I appreciate thier hospitality greatly.

its alright dude.

thanx for making me define a little better what I am willing to do.

I have a lot of fun with what I do. “a joy shared is a joy doubled.”

cheers,

M

p.s.

watching is free…participating will cost ya [;)]
