I am making my next board and have a question. The first board I made I had the finbox set by someone else. It was a single so the box went in after the lam and hotcoat. I have since got the futures install kit and have a question. I know I need to do it before the lam, but I was wondering should I do it right before I lam. Then glass right away? Or can I set the boxes and wait a few days to lam? (The reason why I ask is that I don't have my glass yet and am waiting for it.) I am afraid that if I do it and then wait, the lam resin will cure and cause me to have bumps and hard points, which I won't be able to grind without touching foam. So I guess I kinda answered my own question, but wanted opinions. I should do it all at the same time.
Oh yeah, making a quad fiah. 6'X (161/2" (21")16 1/4")x 2 3/8"
set the boxes now and just make sure to clean up any extra resin so you won't have any bumps.
Thanks Rcone, I was thinking that most of the lam resin might soak into the foam and not leave as much excess as when you lam over reg glass, but wanted to know what you all thought. I guess it should be fine either way. Is there a better chance of floating the boxes if I do it as I lam? Meaning they rise a lil when curing under glass?
Hey Aroq,
We install the futures and wait for them to "tack up" and then laminate the bottom. Use a small 1" chip brush to clean up and drips of resin and keep it nice and clean. Most people laminate them with a football patch under the first layer of cloth, but we have found it traps bubbles easily. Instead we laminate the bottom as normal and the next day grind the front and back "ramp" of the future boxes lower and football patch over them. This keeps more cloth over the tabs of the box. Typically we put the patches on after laminting the top and griding the laps, right before hotcoating. Hope that helps.
