Glassing a wake surf board

I’m of to our family house in orlando this coming Tuesday and though the need to build a quick wakesurfer to take with incase it’s flat. It’s a skimboard style thing I’ve done out of inch thick eps that I have bent and glued a balsa stringer into. My plan is to run some carbon down the rails or stringer then conventionally glass it in epoxy  probably a double 6 top and bottom but I’m a little woried that it will warp as it cures. Odviosly there’s the rocker table thing but can that be done when not vacuumed ?

Many thanks charlie

Just prop up the nose and tail with a long, or similar block.  Won't warp from glassing if you leave it on the logs.  If you go triple deck and double bottom, you won't need the stringer or the carbon.  Just be sure to use full 2" laps.

Cheers many thanks indeed I’ll give that a shot. When you say propping up do you not worry to much when doing the bottom then lock the rocker in when you do the deck ? As I bent the foam to the stringer I have lost a little rocker already so could do with building a fraction in. (I went for 1"in the tail and 2" in the front) it’s been a little different dealing with such a floppy blank

Many thanks

When you prop the nose and tail, you glass the deck.  A cured deck, with overlapped rails, will hold the rocker so you can glass the bottom.

Sweet that all makes sence now  any tips on fin size and placement ? the board is 4’6 x 22 1/4 planing on puting some futures in, it’s the first wake suf board I’ve built

Thanks again charlie

here it is if anyone was wondering what it was looking like, just need to figure out finplacement and put the boxes in then glass the little thing

  Dats WIDE!

Drill holes to insert removeable fins.  Thru deck, fill with resin/glass combo.  You can use as much fin as you like.  For sliding 360 tricks, smaller.  For carving big turns and huge spray, maybe quad 5"ers.  And anything in between.  Ramps need slider 2" fins, wide based.

im used to surfing sup’s that are 29’’ wide it doesnt look wide to me  lol  o well ill leave it as is just give a excuse to do anuther at some point  im only going to behind a mastercraft 190 so figured it wouldnt harm having a little more area.

cool ive got some old 2" wakeboard fins kicking around and just aked my bro to look out in the garage in florida and he has found some old 3.75" surf style fins so thats should be ok for starters.

ive been searching litraly all day for info on building boards and mesurements on where to put the fins but no real luck a while back i did stumble across a few build but can no loger find them. i was going to ask on  wakeboarder.com but i cant seam to register.

the rear center fin looks like they are nomaly about 4" off the tail? any tips on where to put the fronts is like a normal surf board?

sorry for all the questions and thanks for your time and help

im off now to start preping it for glassing

back of sidefins 9" up from pin tail.

Your board is a hybrid, so no current formula works.

More fin farther back, better hold for carving.

Less fin, better spinning.

cool thanks ill start with that and take some resin and choped fibers and ballons with me with the expectation of drilling a few extra holes it should make for some interesting and fun times, although just heard the lake has got real low and there strugeling to get the boats of the lifts in our lake fingers double crossed they get some rain before i leave!

Lower water, use 2" long twin fins on nose and on tail.

Add a 10 meter kite..... equals kiteboarding, no boat needed, just 10 mph plus winds.

That is true I actually windsurfer though too, however I am tempted to get a kite but unfortunately and it’s prity sheltered with lots of trees so not perfect for kites could be fun and there’s plenty over here

My favorite wakesurfers are standard shortboards a few inches shorter, a little wider, and a little thinner than I’d use in surf.  Shorter and thinner because I don’t have to be able to paddle in to catch waves.  Wider because I’m going slower and not worried about hanging up on a lip.  Smaller fins since I’m not cranking huge bottom turns, and there’s always the possibilty of throwing spinning tricks.  A friend has an old school twinnie kneeboard that totally rules.  Personally, I’m not that fond of super thin wakeboard type boards for wakesurfing, but that’s all a personal taste thing.  While they’re still really fun, and better for spinning, skate-style tricks, I like the sensation from a “regular” surfboard better.  I spent a few years wakeboarding about 300+ days a year.  My “wakeboard” friends seemed to like thin, wake-style boards best, but my “surf” friends lean towards surfboards.  All a matter of preference, and all good.  I’ve even had fun wakesurfing rough-cut hunks of plywood.  It’s all about loading the boat with fat friends who just wanna watch (the extra weight makes the wake better), and hot girls

Here’s a video a friend took during a crappy day a while back.  Riding a 6’1" hollow carbon fiber Brewer shortboard:

Cool nice one yea I grew up waterskiing and wake boarding but after a few bad accidents later on I stopped competeing and started surfing I know only realy ski or board when I go to Florida were are boat is. I probably would have done a surf style one but wih only materials I have had kicking around and a few eve this week to make it before flying tuesday it is what it is and not to much to loose fingers crossed we can get the boat in or I’ll be trying to get a ride somewhere else looking toward to it all the same as it’s been flat here for mounths
