GLASSING AND CANCER

When I glassed my first board I did not wear any kind of respirator/mask. I did glass in a well ventilated area. Basically it was my ignorance of the dangers of working with polyester resin and such. Now I use a respirator religously. Even for the smallest ding fix. If the resin can is open, my mask is on. But I was wondering if anyone out there has seen the effects of exposure to these dangerous chemicals. And I am looking for specific details of people you know who have been affected by it. Basically I am panicking becasue of my early exposure to glassing chemicals. I don’t meran to be a bummer and bring a somber mood to Swaylocks, I simply want to learn as much as I can about this to really clue me in to the dangers of the recreation that I have chosen. thanks a bunch. Drew

First thing is don’t panic. I built my first board without a mask and I will say is that it was a mistake to never be repeated. If you want to learn more read through the MSDS’s. The link is for polyester resin from Fiberglass Supply’s web site. http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/Miscellaneous/MSDS/msds.html http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/pdf/msds/S249AMSDS.pdf Board building can be a nasty business, if not done correctly. Safety equipment is what most first time builders neglect to use. If you got sick from the vapors like I did you learned your lesson. I have seen several builders who never used a vapor mask while glassing. They all seem to have the intellect level of Beavus and Butthead.>>> When I glassed my first board I did not wear any kind of respirator/mask. > I did glass in a well ventilated area. I have the same concerns. Noy only did I glass without a mask, I sand the resin with a mask–I just rapped arround a bandana around my mouth etc. I inhaled and ate plenty of dust. I am sure it wasn’t the healthiest thing for my lungs. I know asbestos particals are very small and can cause cancer. Can to to three times of sanding a board without protection really harm lung tissue? Any doctors in the house?

See Costco for a new healthy choice … have > fun i used to laminate/hot-coat/gloss in a closed room w/no ventilation when i was a teenager. I would also use heaters in the winter cool months to kick the resin and try to avoid bugs and dust. my eyes were bleached in color, my liver was enlarged, and i did not make it into medical school. But i can play the guitar.

The dust(resin and fiberglass)is bad for the lungs. Get a real dust mask that will filter the particulates. I like the 3M Series 6000 with particulate filter for sanding and vapor filters for glassing. The cost is less than $16 to save your lungs.>>> I have the same concerns. enlarged liver?? what are the symptoms of that? this is caused from the fumes of glassing?

…and impress the ladies with your styrene enhanced, unfeasibly large > testicles! I’ve been told that acetone affects the kidneys( dehydration),could explain glassers affection for beer. Catlyst affects the liver(as in enlarged) and Styrene definitly causes cancer(watch that surfacing agent spillage). Protect yourself by all means.Aloha,Kokua http://www.yahoo.com
