Glassing Bombaproof Log

“Never lay thin over thick” is this true? -fat jokes aside

I am about to glass a noserider I shaped but have a question since this is the 1st one I have shaped. I read that it is better to put heavier weave over lighter weave ie put a 10oz volan patch over the 8oz volan deck versus putting the 10oz under the 8… if this is the case why is it bad to put lighter oz glass over heavier oz.

Anyone have any input?

I was also curious to know if I decide to go with 2 layers of 10oz on the deck, should I cut the first layer so that it does not wrap the rails?

I want this log to be bomb proof and if I can get away with lamming two 10oz at once with both wrapping the rail it would be ideal since we all hate those pesky rail dingalings.

Thanks!

I would think heavy first the lite

less weave before hot coat

When I learned to glass proper, we used 6 oz over 4 oz. The reason the 6 oz is on top is because the tighter weave of the 4 oz cloth makes it harder to get the resin out than the looser weave 6 oz cloth. I guess that’s why you heard to put the heavier weave on top.

would that be for lamming both layers at the same time?

that would make sense

my initial respons ,I was thinking of second layer after the first was set

But If someone has tried both ways, please chime in I would like to know if there really is a differance

One layer of 6 oz. on the bottom…two layers of 6 oz on the top…poly or epoxy…

There’s no such thing as a bombaproof surf board…bombs win over surfboards everytime…

Why do you want to torture yourself with 8oz and 10 oz cloth???

What are “pesky rail dingalings”???

Yeah, 6-4 deck lammed all at once, usually with a 4 oz tail patch as well.

drop shakas and not bombs ehh!? maybe a roll cage as well welded to the fin… or not

In all seriousness though, I was just curious because my buddy glassed a noserider with a 10oz volan deck patch under an 8oz laminate wrap. Thats all thats going on the deck and then a single 8oz on the bottom.

I’m going for a heavy summertime log and was looking for the weight and glide so I was curious to know if you can lam two layers of 10oz at once and still wrap both layers without huge issues.

Goodday!

Trying to do a rail wrap with 2 layers of 10oz Volan is going to be a real bitch the cloth is very stiff and is not going to want to make the wrap. Also for the same reason you want to cut your 8oz so it does not make the rail wrap. If it were me I would not use the volan as my under coat, I would go eglass, 8 oz then put the 10 oz with my 2 to 3 inch rail wrap, if you want to do a deck patch of volan lay that under your 8 oz Eglass, but don’t use 10 oz for your deck patch. Then lay a fin patch of volan on the bottom then lay your 10 oz volan over the top of that and do your rail wrap. By doing it this way your color green tint look is going to be even looking. Remember you are going to have to do a double hot coat unless you are one great sander other wise every time you sand through and hit the glass you are going to have a white spot. Don’t get carried away with two layers of 10 oz, on a nose rider weight is your friend but lets not get carried away as too much weight is going to make a slug not a surfboard, also remember not to cross your stringer at right angles with your deck patch or fin patch, this will cause a stress on the stringer and act like a knife. I had a friend of mine, who made board for all of us, make himself a board back in the 60’s he glassed it with 2 layers of 10 oz volan top and bottom. He also was looking for a bullet proof board. Well he could not even carry it down the cliff so he would just wall up and throw it off into the water. One time it hit the edge of a rock and you could see where it had hit the rock. Not on the board but on the rock.

Howzit surfthis , When doing a 6/4 glassing schedule you got it right. 4oz on the blank and 6oz on top.Aloha,Kokua
