Glassing Cork

Hi guys, I had a question to any glassers out there who might be able to help.  My girlfriend has been saving wine corks for years and wanted to turn it into some type of project.  I took some chicken wire and shaped it into a 3 1/2 foot tall wine bottle shape.  Then I took the 500+ wine corks and glued them to the chicken wire frame (see picture attached).

I wanted to get some advice on how I might be able to glass this thing to give it extra strength and a glossy and glassy appearance.  I tried glassing a couple of spare corks lying around and the polyester resin seemed to adhere fairly well.  However, after shaping my first surfboard a few years ago, I tried glassing it too and completely ruined it.  Needless to say, I’m a little hesitant to try this before getting some advice.

Since wine corks are rounded I can’t use fiberglass cloth or it will leave hundreds of little air pockets between each cork.  I basically need to just dump the resin over the the whole thing.  I wanted to know which kind of resin to use to give it the most glossy appearance without sanding.  Should I use a standard polyester resin?  Gloss resin?  Epoxy?  Will I have to sand it to get the glossy appearance?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Or if anybody living in Orange County is willing to glass it for $100 or so I would definitely be okay with that too.

Could it be wrapped up round the sides and bottom then poured into the top… like a 3ft carafe???

MWB,

Many multiple coats of epoxy or poly.  Brush top to bottom and catalyze (poly) for a slow kick or use a slow epoxy.  Support it on something to keep the resin from pooling at the bottom.  If using poly, use lam resin until you get it built up and finish with a coat of gloss.  If using epoxy keep applying within the epoxy's recoat window until you get the desired thickness.  Pretty neat looking creation!
