yeah, Gray, DO it !!!

I have a camera…

“chip”

Here we go again!!!

Christmas present for my niece. Based on the Blaxell and stretched to 6’9", I’ve got 4 weeks to finish this one before she arrives in Perth. Artwork will be her choice and using FCS fins. (Ben I’ll need your help with those)

Side rail supports going on on the weekend then sandwich top and bottom sheets.

Still using the same jigsaw blade that was used on the other 2 boards and Ben’s new rakey fin, cuts fibreglass as well. I think I’ll mount that blade when it finally dies…

cheers

Hicksy

oops !!

…and here’s me thinking it was going to be a single fin … Grant, will you be putting a back fin box in too, I hope ??

No ulterior motives , [of course !!], but if your niece is a bit of a spunk, I’ll make a flexy wood and glass fin for the board, if you like. (You know, for good east coast/west coast relations, that kind of thing!) …hang on, do I need to rephrase any of that , I wonder ? …too late, it’s posted now…

ben

p.s. - thanks for the photos Grant…I look forward to seeing this one in the ‘flesh’, too! [the board ,Grant…the board !!]

… the ‘Hicksy’ wooden surfboard photo archives are growing …

There will be no mincing around with this one mate, If Santa doesnt deliver on time he’ll be coping heaps!

Let me know the next time you go to Clarkson Bunno’s, I need a sheet of pine and dont get up that way much. Really liked the pine on the stubbie.

I’ve got to get my latest fish done by Xmas to take down south for some test driving.

BTW Ben, Litmus rocks, the fish footage is amazing, if I could surf a fraction like that I’d be stoked

Gaol bait Ben, 14 yo, yes she’s good looking as are all the girls in my family. Touch her and my sister WILL kill you dead, revive you and then kill you again just to make sure.

This will be Jessica’s first board and she wants me to teach her to surf while she’s here.

Gray, I’m going to Bunnos on the weekend, what size do you want, 8x4? I’ll price it on my way home tomorrow and let you know.

cheers

Hicksy

Hicksy, cheer for that mate 8’x4’ is great, I’ll square you up when I see you next. Hope you dont have to sift thro 50 sheets to find that special one!

BTW how did you go Sunday on the stubbie?

so ... your SISTER... is HOW old ? you did say she's single , didn't you ?? [that's my signature below...]

The stub went really well. I think it’s strong enough, at one stage it had 3 kids sitting on it being dragged backwards by another one by the leg rope in 3" of water. I half expected it to be finless by the end of the day, but it came through without a scratch.

When it was “my turn” it was a blast. Even floated my 85kg. That thing turns on a sixpence and you can ride it toes over nose. Top fun even as a belly board.

I’ll get some piccies of Mackenzie standing up on it this weekend.

You know she’s going to be World Champion Surfer when she grows up… she tells everyone that, she’s stoked all the time about it.

I’ll grab you a sheet of pine on the weekend, if the finances stretch, otherwise I’ll PM you my account info so you can do a Internet transfer.

cheers

Hicksy

Cheers Hicksy, let me know and I can transfer the mulla.

Looking forward to Berts thread on the vacumm bagging, might be able to apply to the hollows and get a bit of weight out of them.

Was wondering how I could put a fin box in my first hollow, but dont have any support in the tail for the box, I was stumped until I read your idea of pumping in expanding foam to fill the tail void. I reckon it would work. Might give it a go in the new year.

I can see a champion surfer emerging from the norther suburbs!! proud dad in tow

The F.C.S. plugs into wood will be a newie to me hicksy...
anyone have any advice on that ?
I'm used to digging out foam and having the bottom of the plug sit attached to the deck's glass pretty much... how will that go with wood , I wonder ?
Any help much appreciated on this... cheers !
ben

This is what I was planning on doing

I’ll need some help with positioning the plugs, spacing etc.

I reckon it’ll work

yeah that should work… make it a good length of foam in your NEXT board, double concave [deep] the bottom somehow, and we can put in FOUR front F.C.S plugs and bingo !! wooden bonzer for benny boy…you up for it ??

woohoo…

OK here are the evil plans I prepared to get the correct measurements. Everything is in metric so 1 large square = 10cm. I only draw one half of the board because the other side is going to be the same anyway, less confusion.

I shortened all the rib measurements by 4cm to allow for the cork buildup. The top rib measurement is 24cm not 34cm.

That’s why it looked really stupid when I put that piece in.

Looking at the plan the first rib shows 14cm x 2 = 28cm - 4cm all round for the cork = 24cm etc

Depth of each rib is taken from the profile view of the rocker.

Remember check 5 times and cut once. I’ll post the plan of the Malabbie later. Hmmmm laser cutting sounds good, just need a cad program.

cheers

hicksy, thanks alot, the photos at the top of this page are responsible for the inspiration for me to start on my 7’6" hollow pin tail. i hope mine turns out 1/4 as good as yours did.

No worries Gatordave, getting some more piccies developed today that show some of the intermediate stages of building the Malabbie.

Your board will turn out just fine if you don’t rush it, if you get too stuck you know who to ask. Paul Jensens site is a mine of information, he does his his way and I learned heaps from him.

Mine just seem to get easier and easier. I forgot to mention that I cut the rocker piece to an approximate shape and then shaped it until it looks and feels right, then I take the final depth measurements from that piece.

The rail supports are about the hardest to do as they are longer than the board and curve around the edges of the ribs. What I do is make sure the sides are even and string them up the keep the whole structure firm. Then I join 2 pieces of 2" masking tape (=3.75" wide) together and stick it to the nose and run it down one side of the board. Mark where the ribs touch with a pen top and bottom and draw the outline from that. Pull it all off and lay it on the ply and cut both sides from the masking tape template.

Have fun…

Hicksy

Here are the plans for the Malabbie

cheers

Hicksy

Getting ready to put the rail supports on.

Ribs strung up and weighted to make sure the ribs are level. Measure along each edge from nose to tail to make they measure the same.

2 Pieces of 2" masking tape stuck together (side by side) and stuck to the rib edges

Mark the top and bottom of the ribs onto the tape allowing 1/4" extra top and bottom for a little leeway when fitting.

Next…

Pull the tape off and stick to the piece of wood you were going to use for the rail support. Use a straight edge and join the dots. Ben, I told you, stay away from the dog!!!

Cutting out and joining to the ribs tonight.

cheers for now

Hicksy

Hey Gray

That wood only comes as 6’x4’ so I didn’t get you any,…unless you’re making a stubbie or small fish…or using 2 sheets somehow.

Now there’s a brilliant idea.

Let me know what you want to do.

cheers
