not sure what’s going on here, this is the third time I’ve tried to post back to you and nothing seems to be reging. Oh well try again.
That’ll be well good, I’ll look forward to that. Any chance of some more progress pics.
Does that really work with the anti freeze? I assumed it was a joke!
This glassing process is twisting my head, I just can’t get a flat finish on, the resin gels so damned fast. So, lots and lots of sanding it is then! No hurry now though, there aint no way I’m getting in the water til next spring now, unless I win that holiday to Hawaii. It is damned cold here already. Still, I’ll be snowboarding to work before too long I reckon.
5 weekends so far. I’d say that I’ll be doing graphics this weekend and then glassing the next.
Still looking for the graph paper I drew the board design on, seems the fairies in my household have put it somewhere else…hmmmm…is there a spray that kills fairies…
Having a ball with this one. Basic measurements 5’4" 22" wide. I’ll get all the specs together tonight after final sanding and shaping.
Hicksy, mate your on fire, you’ve knocked that out quick…looks the goods as well, the ladies will love it.
my ring has been hanging out at work so I havent had much time to chat or shape of late. Fish mk II is still in the skeleton form, got to go buy somemore ply and basla after the deck stuff up. On top of that I’ve got side tracked into turning my carport / shaping shed into a proper shed and get myself organised.
Took the fisk mk I upto bombing range on Saturday, got a few good waves, but nothing special. Was a miracle we surfed at all. got the 4x4 bogged on the beach, turned out that the front hubs werent engaging so it was like driving a corolla in deep sand. Luckily another 4x4 stopped, so we hitched a lift and abandoned the rescue attempt until we at least had a surf…dragged the motor out and retreated to the pub with our new found rescue friends…all in all a good day.
Let’s have a paddle, how about 13 November 9am 2nd carpark Triggs, doesn’t matter about the surf, I’ll pick Chipfish up and we’ll have a session/board swap. I’m sort of booked out for the next 2 weeks.
but maybe br***ton…may be a bit less crowded, so we can actually see / photograph each other surf ?
I’d be stoked to meet another wozzie…bluejuice, bert ? what are you up to that day ?
I’d love to have a go on a wooden hollow fish…I was just saying to hickster t’other day how unreal I reckon a wood fish would look … LOVE some photos of / on one !!
Hey Chipfish, I agree we may have to think of another destination to get away from the throng, mind you anyone unfortunate enough to get in the path of the hollow will have the scar to prove it…I copped one of the fish pins in my ear the other day at trigg, thought it had gouged my ear drum out…gonna start wearing my mellon protector again!
Its true, I contemplate my naval in amongst the trees in Darlington, as far from the surf as you’d want to be…but I do work on the coast and get to surf when I want, so its pretty good, I dont mind driving!!!
looking forward to the get together, I’d really appreciate some feedback on how my fish rides from someone who knows how a fish should ride, so your name is down for test pilot.
Cool bananas Hicksy. You have a nice looking rocker and profile, I hadn’t seen that before. As it’s your first, the word ‘Original’ could be used, but you’ve got to name it, it’s your baby. Are we going to get any surfing pics? surfing pics would be neat.
Cheers, Roy
re: wooden boards being surfed photos …
… Bert, are you following this thread ?
IF you’re free, any chance you could join Hicksy, Gray , and myself on the 13th november meeting at 8.30am at my place [scarborough] for a 'wood board ’ session ?
I’ll bring a camera to record the historic occassion.
I’d really like to meet you , and Gray, and see your boards, having already met and surfed with Hicksy , and had a coupla little waves on his wood 8’er you see here…
I have found this thread FASCINATING / inspirational… and can’t wait to see the new stubbie he’s currently working on in action !
[I was there to witness and photograph the artwork being glassed on saturday just gone.]
Once I have the film developed, I hope to contribute something to this fascinating subject…
It’s AMAZING to think that in this little hick [sorry mate!] town of Perth, 3 wood board builders exist, and all post at “swaylocks” !!

ps - bonus ‘front page photo’ from our local rag [‘the stirling times’] a few weeks back of ‘local pioneer’ Murray Smith with wooden board [with apologies to Bert’s and other’s ancestors due, perhaps ?]
Tip for the archives. You can use Acrylic Water based paints on wood and glass over with epoxy. I did this on the weekend and dived in head first. No runs no nothing. Pretty scary putting the epoxy on but it turned out better than I imagined. The colours are a lot deeper and really stands out against the golden pine wood (or is that plynewood) and deeper cork colour. The Stubbie should be finished next weekend. Chip and I made a couple of small bonzer type D fins lammed pine, cork, pine. Sanding them tonight ready to glass on.
Started on the next board too, christmas order for my niece who lives in Bega. 6’6" x 20" rounded pin based on a 5’6" Blaxell.
Rocker done then the ribs to measure and cut to size against that.
Wish I had a digital camera…just have to wait for the snail photo system to turn it around.
Had a great time with Ben “Chipfish” on the weekend, glassing, sanding and surfing. We ended up at North Mullaloo early on Sunday morning where I teach a young lady how to surf. She stood up for the first time and you couldn’t get the grin off her face. Even remembered that I had a wettie in the boot of the car so Chip had a surf on my 8’ HWS and my 6’1" Mike Davis thruster. Chip, I put the fin in the middle box, should be a bit tighter now…

Thanks 4est, It was a family effort, we all had a go at the artwork.
The first HWS is always the hardest and seems to get easier on the next one. I learnt heaps from Paul Jensens site and from there I adjusted the way I do things.
HWS are fun to make and you can use heavy woodwork tools like belt sanders and jigsaws to end up with a great board.
Good luck with yours, don’t forget to post piccies here and ask for help if you run into trouble. Plenty of that here.
