Glassing in Futures boxes

Gday, Just looking through the archives I have found some good tips about avoiding the air bubbles around the boxes.I have been using a butterfly tail patch in my first two boards with futures boxes ( I saw this in the installation video on the futures website,I also thought it might add strength as opposed to football patches). My question is would using the butterfly tail patch instead of footballs make it more difficult to remove the bubbles.I havent tried cutting the glass yet but plan to do so from now on.Thanks in advance ,Matt

After talking to our local ding repairman. I’ve started doing full patches over the box that go over the rail as well. Seems his most common repair on a Futures box are cracks at the rail.

Yes it’s harder to get the air out but you just have to be patient. Since you sand away all the glass on the top of the box I’ve been thinking that it might wet out better with less air if I could somehow slit the glass over the box. Maybe at least the box patch.

Howzit Toes, By all means slit the glass when glassing over Futures box. The way to do it is to make the slit along the edge of the raised box where the edge of the tape is on the plastic . I do this after the rest of the bottom is squeegeed and work the bubles out with your finger. Just don’t cut down the middle since you will slice the tape and then resin can get into the box.Aloha,Kokua

Mahalo Kokua,

That makes much more sense then trying to fish those air bubbles out through the weave of the glass. What do you use to slit the wet glass with?

Howzit Toes, A single edged razor blade. Aloha,Kokua

Mahalo!

Was just looking at a few air bubbles next to my boxes in my latest glass job, thinking oh well. The next time I glass and slay those pesky bubbles I will give your name a cheer, thanks again.

Gday Kokua, Thanks for your advice on this topic…Just to clarify…Do you squeegee the bottom including over the boxes and do the laps,Then slice the glass over the boxes along the edge of the tape?..or…Do you squeegee the bottom around the boxes ,leaving the boxes dry before you cut the glass, then squeegee the boxes and do the laps?..Its just that I have some recollection of reading the archives on this topic and someone said to cut the glass before its wet…Im having nightmares about airbubbles ,it seems to take me longer to dig out the bubbles around the boxes and patch them up than it takes me to glass the whole board…Again many thanks,Matt.

Howzit Mathew, I laminate the whole bottom and rails and slicing the box and finger squeegeeing it is the final step.Aloha,Kokua

Thanks a million Kokua.Youre worth your weight in gold.Aloha.Matt.

I put in my first set of Futures boxes today!..must say it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be

sorry to dredge up an old thread, I was just stoked and wanted to share, I have a house full of girls and when I tell them stuff like that they just have a blank stare…I can’t wait until my 3 month old son grows up!!!
