Wondering what happens if you don’t use catalyst with ur resin, will ur resin harden without UV rays? Also, is there a catalyst that hardens the resin without the need of UVs? Also, how do u make catalyst into a liquid form to insert into ur bodi bottle?

HUH???/Herb

Huh x’s TWO!

Umm, catalyst is made to make resin go hard, I think?

Umm, catalyst is in liquid form, I think?

Anyone?

Joelyboaly, you are not to clear there, can you hear me?, can you hear me now?

‘wondering what happens if you don’t use catalyst with ur resin’

Nothing except a bloddy yuck mess.

2nd yes! the resin that needs sun is UV the other stuff doesn’t need it.

Josh.

Joel,

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m guessing you have your hands on one of those ding repair kits that you get from a surfshop… the ones that say on the packet “hardens in sunlight”. If I’m correct, I’d suggest:

  1. Read the packet for instructions on hardening - I’m sure it’s pretty accurate with temperature ranges and the amount of UV required to harden. UV is free and unless you are a certain count from Transylvania it should be fairly accessable for you

  2. It’s only intended for ding repair, and simple dings at that…

I know nothing more about these ding repair kits as I don’t use them. You might want to search the forums a bit for info on resins that are used in the glassing of surfboards. (e.g. The hardener comes in a liquid form and is pretty easy to get into a bottle)

i don’t think anyone can answer that question without more information on what exactly it is that you’ve got and what exactly you did with it so that we can clear up some mutual confusion, but here’s some basic info that might help you get everything sorted out…

uncatalyzed resin will not harden under any circumstances…that’s what the catalyst is for.

there are two types of catalysts:

  1) MEKP - a liquid catalyst added to the resin just prior to use to make it harden (this is what the bodi bottle is for)

  2) UV - a powdered catalyst that can be added to the resin any time prior to use, that will only begin to harden (and will do so VERY quickly) when exposed to UV light rays (in many cases, "UV resin" is purchased with this catalyst already mixed in).

now…whatcha wanna know??
