glassing over a damaged PU/PE with epoxy advice please?

i want to glass over the bottom of a weak/ damaged fish which is polyester resin an glass the lap’s will be blended in to the deck and i will give it a whole sanding coat with epoxy!

im going on the idea that epoxy will be stronger, and it will key/stick to the PE resin ? shall i just glass with PE?

does the whole glassing over an existing laminate work well ? or is it worth the effort?

cheer’s guy’s

try and keep your mediums the same

hmmmm where/who did I learn that from???

I’ve repaired the nose of a PU/PE board with epoxy before, but you need to prepare the surface very well. In some spots, I didn’t scratch up the surface enough, so over time, bits of glass and/or resin have flaked off.

Cheers
Paul

so i may as well use PE resin then

Fully cured resin can be rough sanded and resin can be applied on top of that. Poly or Epoxy......

but I'm not standing in the room next to you.....and....I'm not looking at the project....

You can epoxy over Poly But as a gentle rule You can not use poly over epoxy.  Like all things to do with working with repairs and resins it is the prep work that in critical. sand sand sand clean clean clean sand some more.

Hmmm...I put Poly over Epoxy....as a gloss coat. Sands, polishes beautifully. No problem. Since the gloss or sanded coat is basically non-structural, why not..??

I admire Kensurf's work and value his opinion, so I'm sure if he says so, there are good reasons.  Nevertheless, I will admit to using Resin Research epoxy to glass over a pu/pe surfboard, without any problems.

In my case, I had an old beater board, but the deck was pretty good shape.  I sanded the bottom, added a nose block and tail block cuz they were busted, started patching dings, then just decided to fill the dings and dents with spackle, painted the whole thing with acrylic, and then glassed over it with epoxy resin.  I wrapped the rails, and also glassed a narrow deck patch where the glass was cracked along the stringer, all with Resin Research epoxy.

No problems.  So far, LOL (been about 6 months).  Not saying I recommend doing it, just saying I have done it.  I have also done pretty extensive ding repairs on a pu/pe board with epoxy resin and fiberglass, again, no problems.

I have heard people discourage mixing the two (polyester resin and epoxy), but I tend to use what I have, and since I always glass my boards with epoxy, that's what I have.  No warranties expressed or implied.

For 16 years I had my own Yacht repair and refinishing business It was common practice to use epoxy resin over ploy to solve problems with fiberglass blistering.  In all that time I never had one problem with epoxy over Ploy.  The problem of ploy over Epoxy is you will not have a good bond. in the case of using ploy as a gloss coat  I agree why not the worse is you will at some point have to sand it all off and redo the gloss coat.

thank’s guy’s

my thought’s have been confirmed, but i kinda wanted to use the kwick kick resin research i have to see what happened !

i have now glassed the bottom with pe and will sand it in to the dec, seriously thinking of pitching the pe though and exclusively using epoxy pe is really stinking me out!

it’s kind of a weird experiment board, the deck was layed up on a smooth surface with glass and hemp cloth, and pe then pulled of so it had a glass like finsh, cut to shape about an inch or so from the rail line, the bottom was glassed on 4oz with pe after the whole pu board was sealed with pe, then i vac bagged the deck to the blank overlapping the bottom glass lap on the deck, then sanding coat on the bottom.

this was the first board i have vac bagged, lot’s of thing’s learn’t the deck was real strong but the bottom not obviously, i wanted to use the sunova approach of having a semi flexible bottom! too weak as the foam was experimental eco foam and basicaly no good i actualy had a lock box pull out the blank!

but it’s a flare tail and go’s sick so i am resurecting it with some added strength and weight.

any one tried any of my method’s before? with any success?

Artz:

Definitely agree that the poly over epoxy is only a mechanical bond. I've done several boards this way and like you said what's the worst that can happen? But I'll tell you guys something else weird about doing Poly as a gloss coat over Epoxy. I was having issues with having to vent epoxy boards or risk them delaming due to expansion. I didn't vent the three that I glossed with Poly and have not had one problem. Do you guys think there is a connection? While Poly may not be as structurally strong...is it more heat or UV resistent?  I know it's a little off the topic but what the hell, sharing is sharing right?

First post made it seem like you were doing a repair.

it’s come out well so far !

interesting about the pe top coat on epoxy, i wonder if the high heat , fire proof stuff is pe or epoxy?

epoxy goes softer in the sun than a pe does’nt it? if it’s custom clear resin
