I was taking a shot at building my own board and it turned into a disaster during the glassing process.
The glassing process was real gooey and I had a hard squeegee. Can the gloss or the hot coat go bad in the bottle?
Do you think my mix was off? After watching the JC glassing video it looked pretty easy??? I still can’y figure out where I went wrong. I’m not giving up I will try it again…Any ideas or suggestions???
Howzit wesley, Maybe you could give us some more details on exactly what happened, resin is gooey stuff to begin with and you are jumping ahead of your self thinking about the hotcoat and gloss. Clean up your lamination first. Did the resin go off to fast or was it something else. The glassing video makes it look easy because the glasser is a pro and has probably done thousands of laminations. Get the Damascus video with Cleanlines for a detailed example of glassing. The 101 video is not that detailed and leaves steps of the process out. A friend of mine had that video and I watched it with him and it made me laugh. I f you know any pro glassers then spend some time with them in the shop and listen and watch, hopefully he will let you ask questions but don't get in his way or be a pest. When I have people in my shop while glassing I tell them when to keep quiet during certain steps and just watch and learn.Aloha,Kokua
Thanks for your reply…The laminating process was also a mess…The fiberglass kept bunching up and I had bubbles all in and under the fiberglass. I have a feeling that the squegee I was using was maybe too hard??? Where can I purchase a copy of that video?
Howzit wesley, The glass bunching was probably due to the squeegee but not neccessarily the the cause. If the glass is wrinkled when you lay it on the blank that can cause the glass to move around so before glassing use an old squeegee or a brush or even your hand to smooth the glass out. As for the video go to the resources and click the links and then the videos link and it wiil show the master series, then click that link and it will take you to the info you need to buy the video. Bet you were using 4oz glass, it likes to move but I have seen it happen with 6oz. Another thing is you may have had the squeegee perpendicular to the board when you should have it at an angle when first squeegeeing. this will force the resin into the blank and don’t squeegee perpendicular til you are taking off the excess resin in the lamination. Hope this helps. Aloha,Kokua.
Howzit wesley, UV resin is kicked off with UV sun rays so it won't go off til you put it inthe sun or under UV Light bulbs. But it will also kick if there is any indirect UV rays getting to it so keep the doors shut and cover the windows before using. Flourecent lighting has a small effect on it but not enough to worry about. Let no sun light enter the room from any opening. You can work with it til you are done with the lamination without the time factor.Aloha,Kokua
