glassing question

I am making a long board for a buddy.Per his request I painted a two inch band of color around the deck 1 1/2 inches from the rail. I’m concerned that if I just free lap the bottom it will discolor the painted band. What should I do next? 1. Spray the color with a clear coat and free lap the bottom. 2. Baste the colored band with a little lam resin, then free lap. Free lap and then baste over the colored band before clean up. 3. Spray the color with clear coat tape it off and cut lap. I’m planning on a resin pin stripe on the hot coat to edge the colored band. 4. Any better way I haven’t thought of. Any suggestion?

Laminate the deck first. This is called a reverse lap and eliminates problems such as this.

…Reversing is a good solution as Greg mentioned,or make sure your lap is long enough to cover the band completely.Herb

i spray the rails with Krylon clear coat, matte finish, first. then free lap like usual. after it sets i flip the board over and baste a very light coat of lam. resin to cover up the colored foam. this allows you to get a smoother rail, and a little safety for your colored rails…good luck
