Glassing Questions - Mike Minchinton Robert August Saber

I acquired a Robert August Saber shaped by Mike Minchinton that has been sitting in my shed for a while now. After reading as much as I could from searching Swaylocks, I realized I need to ride this thing. There are some dings I need to take care of first. I didn’t see this design before so I figured I’d post some pics.

The dimensions on the stringer says it’s a 9’2" but when I measure it, it comes out to 9’.5".

Now for the dings. I’m finding a good number of pinholes (17+) in the bottom.

My question is, should I fix every pinhole individually, or generally sand in the area that a lot of them are and lay out another gloss coat?

Also, does anybody know who did the glassing for these boards? The tail interests me because there seems to be a good amount of glass showing before you see foam. If I was making a board like this, I’d probably sand it down more. Can anybody expand on why this glass looks like this on the tail? Maybe possibly a ding repair?

It depends on how old the board is. It could have been glassed at Spanners which is no more, or at his current location, Aloha Glassing in Westminster, CA. Depending on how much work you want to do you could sand each one back down to the cloth, hot coat, sand it with 80 grit, shoot a gloss, blend it, and then polish it. or you could give it a little sand, shoot a hot coat and just seal it up. Personally, since there are only six little areas that are spread out, I’d suggest hitting each one if you have the time and patience.

“since there are only six little areas that are spread out, I’d suggest hitting each one”.

No, there’s over 17 little areas. 14 in the nose and 3 in the tail. I’m still not exactly sure what to do. I’m also going to be using Sun Cure so I might just do what you say and hit each spot. Any idea why the tail has that thicker glass in certain areas?

Thanks.

Still not the end of the world…or the board and it’s a pretty basic fix since you don’t necessarily have to lay cloth. Are you referring to the resin build up on the diamond tail? Is there a lot of vee in the tail? Could have just been a lazy sander that didn’t tighten up the hot coat on the tail.

Mike's a great guy.................if you need to find him he's over @ aloha glassing .............also steve albin is a great glasser....................aloha is next door to foamez.

p.s. i'd just fix the dings and ride it.
