glassing questions

Hi all,

I started building a mini simmons and I'm just finishing the shaping process (with all kinds of sanding paper up to 600-1000 grit under soft pad) but I still seem to find that there are small holes in my EPS blank (30 kg/m3, home assembled, with stringer), and I will glass it with epoxy resin (no color) using two 200gr glass cloths per side.

My questions are:

1. how can I get rid of these little holes and minor scratches  considering that where Im from it is impossible to find sanding screen?

2. considering I will apply two cloth layers per side should I glass them one after another or two together and then the other two? if the second option is the case do you have any recommendation about between which layer to place the logo and lap line measures for each cloth?

thanks in advance for your help

  1. Light weight spackle, or a microballoon epoxy slurry

  2. do both at the same time, just take your time and work the resin in.

I thought about spackle but in this case I would end up with half of my board spackled since the tiny holes are like everywhere. Wouldn't the board be seriously exposed to risk of delamination?

No worries on delam. You will only have an issue if you spackle too thick. It is a sealing coat, not body filler. There is a ton of debate on this forum about spackle vs no spackle vs epoxy/microballon.
When I first sealed a blank with spackle, I thought it was crazy, but it works.
Here’s a video of what it looks like:

The spackle that he is applying here is a little dry. It goes on much better if you thin with distilled water or acrylic.

also, I think 600 is way to fine for sanding. I usually stop at 100.

Thanks for the advice I will surely go with spackle then.

What do you think about lap line? Should I wrap the rails with all 4 layers of glass?

And what about temp. do you think 10/15 celcius is too low to work the resin before I bring it in the house to cure?
