I am thinking about getting either and EPS or XTR in the near future. I know that these foams are much lighter than regular PU. And my hope is that I can add more glass than the normal 2 layers of 4 oz on the deck and 1 layer or 4 oz on the bottom. The board will be 6’0" x 19" x 2 3/8". So with epoxy resin, which I know is much stronger, what would you suggest? I heard that patagonia goes with 3 4oz layers on top and 2 4oz layers on their EPS boards, which are EPS. Then on the opposite end of the spectrum Firewire only does 1 4oz on the deck and 1 4oz on the bottom on their EPS boards. I have a firewire and it holds up extremely well, but I think this is partly due to the high density foam. I was thinking of going 2 4oz layers of S glass with a 3/4 deck patch on top and a 5oz layer of S glass on the bottom.
With standard #2 EPS, I like to do double 6oz on the deck and a single 6oz on the bottom. It’s really all you need and is simple and straightforward. I believe it’s also cheaper than doing 3x4 deck and 2x4 bottom, and still ends up lighter and stronger than standard PU/PE done with 4oz all around.
