Hey, im building a 14 x 21 inch racing paddle board out of 1lb eps block foam.
My plan is to use 4" carbon fiber uni tape as a bottom stringer and top. I was also going to put the carbon tape on the top rails of the blank and then glass the bottom with 1 layer of 6 oz s glass and the top with 1 layer of s glass with a patch of 10ft and a 4 ft standing area patch all using s glass. Im 143lbs so im guessing i could get away with this?
Does this sound like it will be strong enough? It will be used in mainly flat water (2- 3 ft chop) but knowing me i would probably have to test it out in the ocean if i can balance on it there.
Any suggestions on glassing schedule and carbon tape positioning on how to make it as light and strong as possible using 6 oz s glass and 4" uni directional tape glassed with epoxy?
I built a 12’3" x 26 1/2" 1lb EPS foam race type sup. I used 6 oz e glass tape to run dual stringers, then glassed 1 layer top and bottom with 6 oz e glass, then for the deck patch a 4 &6 oz s cloth deck patch. Last I saw the board it had little heel and toe dents. If I did it again I would run dual carbon tape stringers and 1 layer 6 oz s glass top and bottom, a carbon fiber deck patch and I’d try that webbing along the rail.
The board felt kind of rubbery/squishy but didn’t feel like it was gonna break or smash. Definitely handle with care. I would do the carbon stringers to stiffen the board up, it had quite the flex to it. Otherwise the board was super fast and light weighed in at like 15 lbs with the fin
Thanks to both of you for the advice. Ive actualled used the vector net (webbing) and it was horrible trying to hot coat it on the rails. The clear mesh net that holds it together would not go away. Even after 3 more rail only hot coats. A bunch of sanding and frustration.
The vector net is the last fake material for surfboards build LOL. Oh know the best fashion commercial trick. Had near nothing but a thicker resin layer, wich is in fact a good thing many time. Better use some light “finish” veil for thicker resin layers, they are made for it.
Well if vector net isn’t structural than no need for that lol… I just glassed a board with carbon/kevlar hybrid pain to work with but it seems to be insanely strong. At least it feels that way I haven’t done any test or had the board out, still need to finish it.
