I read some info today from a well known, family owned glass shop that does both production work for big names and lots of custom stuff that they glassed with epoxy from 1980 to 1991 and that the crew is not looking forward to reliving all the “rashes, body aches and respiratory problems”.
My question is: if people were sensitized to epoxy from the older, “bad” epoxy resins in the past, will they be able to use the modern epoxy resins like Resin Research without problems or is it just too late for them because of their prior exposure?
Loosing this glassing shop would be a big blow to custom surfboard lovers everywhere. I hope they can remain in business.
Wow. Out of the 137 people to view this topic so far, no one has answered. I guess it’s just all a mystery still, huh? I was hoping to hear that someone who previously had problems is ok working with RR epoxy. It would be great if these glass shops could just convert over and stay in business.
In my experience most people who have been sensitized to epoxy in the past can use our stuff. This isn’t 100%. It is VERY important that whether you have or have not been sensitized that you NEVER TOUCH contaminated solvents like acetone, We eliminated acetone from our shop years ago so there would never be the temptation to cheat.
I heard that Roger Hinds (sp), Country Surfboards in Westminster ?, is getting set up for epoxy. I guess he’s worked with it in the past and does a pretty good job.
