Glitter and Pearl/Opal in a board

Hey All,

So I’m thinking about ways to get a little bit more creative with resin and what not and became curious about glitter and some of these pearl/opal pigments.

Metal Flake isn’t something I’d like to use, just because I’m not sure how the long term chemical on metal would work, but glitter is just mylar I think.

The pearl/opal pigments are just these kind of “essence” pigments that add a look to an existing color.

I know I can’t be the first one to think of this or do this, so does anyone have any experience with this? If so, how did it come out.

This leads me to question too, which are inlays. Has anyone done any inlays with like mother of pearl or other materials? How has it held?

Thanks

Christian

Hey Christian - I hope you get some more feedback 'cuz I am down with your ideas. I once put mica, gold tinted soft mineral, to be “metal flake” in my hot coat on the bottom. It needed some sanding to smooth it, and it looked ok. Not as shiny as I wanted - I love to kook out the kooks with weird looks. So, I haven’t revisited it, but I am looking forward to what you get. Good luck

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not really looking for like for David Lee Roth Glittler Spandex look, but something to just add that little detail of quality.

Christian,

I put some glitter in my 8 year old daughters skim board. Styro/epoxy. Looked pretty good. She was stoked. Of course, she’s my biggest fan and thinks my boards are beautiful. Hope this helps. Mike

I’ve used both in laminates and in gloss. It hardly showed in laminates. Looked pretty good in a gloss though. I’ve also used it in air brush. The glitter was OK in AB. Also looks good in urethane gloss (UPOL) finishes.

Glitter’s kinda spooky to me…Jus like a big ol’ fishin lure! Someone said they tried it and ended up having glitter specs showing up on glass jobs for months. You can buy acrylic paint with the glitter already in it, might look good for pinlines (on the top).

I saw a Hobie with pearlescent flame job on the nose. It was really cool. you couldn’t really see it but in the right light, neat.

"Just like a big ol’fishin lure"That cracked me up.I can see it now…paint the board like a Giant Rapala Lure put some fake hooks on it and head for the lineup.I bet that would get a few laughs (or strikes). You have me going now.I’m gonna get on the internet and find out how they paint fishing lures. If you guys find anyting let us know.

Ha, be real good for clearing out the summer crowds. You’d have any break in Volusia County all to yourself!

I’d go with Greg’s suggestions.

My boards #2 (gold glitter) and #8 (silver glitter) were both gloss coat glitters, and looked good in bright sunlight, kinda dark in our normal fog weather.

Most paddle outs, surfers would stare, point, and laugh. Of course, guys out with me on #2 were transfixed by more important things …#2 was 9’10" x 19 x 9" pintail around 3.75 thick.

…when I was in Barbados I was informed to take my watch off before going in the water because of the barracudas. Barracuda are highly attracted to shiny sparkly stuff…just something to consider while your feet are dangling from your sparkly board.

Good advice.

I surf mostly in San Francisco, where the visibility of the water is usually around 6’, no barracudas, and whitey’s hunt by smell, not sight.

But your case applies to all of the East Coast, Florida especially, all the Carribean and of course, Hawaii.

I think Texas is exempt from your example, as the waters there are usually just brown brown brown. Usually, not always.

That’d be one hell of interesting experiment for which I don’t wish to participate.

Up here in NJ we are pretty safe from baracudas, but I’m sure the fisherman would love to see some more fish in the water off some of the piers I surf, so for once they won’t be bitching at us.

I’ve used it all for over 20 years with great results. To explain it all would take too much typing but your are welcome to come see my works.Lots of skaters custom done with this stuff ,as well as surfies.Herb

Hey - LeeDD, and all who have done glitter. Love to hear it. I have gone for the ugliest board award lately. “Some day my pics will come.” Ha! Love to keep it fun and light!

Christian, if you want something to take a look at in person

there’s a SurfRX single fin in the Little Silver Brave with

glitter glassed into it.

I havent done this, but it seems that an inlay of paua into a wood taliblock or nose block would be pretty cool. I was thinknig about inlaying shells into the foam but I havent tried it yet. Give it a try it cant hurt too bad.

The last time that I was in Eastern Lines in Lavallette they had a Walden with glitter/metal flake. Looked pretty cool.

Christian,

I was about to ask a question about glitter, you beat me to it. If you want to see a really cool inlay check out the abalone inlay on the Yater boards.

Woody, I thought those inlays were only in the Yater surftechs?

Yeah, stuff is expensive and I might play around with it, but the possibilites are endless for stuff like that. Think of some of the ornate work on guitar necks that are out there. PRS guitars have one of a dragon that is unreal…
