Gloss coat went sideways! Help me!

Hello there all ,

Ive had a shocker of a day and wondering if anyone has any advice. I was on the home stretch with a board and disaster struck. Well, more like stupidity struck.

The board - 9’6 noserider, S cloth, PU blank, Silamar 249 lam resin, coke bottle green tint and fiberglass supply gloss resin.

So all was well and I got to the gloss coat. Base went on smooth , no probs. Glossed the deck and it went smoothly and then I made a fatal error - I rushed. I was in a rush to get to work and decided to pull the tape, but as it turned out it was way to early. I came back to my shed later that day to find the entire tape line had run in hundreds of little drip lines about a half inch long. IE it had dripped from the deck onto the base rail. Nightmare. I then went about trying to scrape them off as the resin hadnt fully kicked hard and in the process I managed to knock the board clean of the racks and dinged the rail at the nose.

The result is I now have drips all along the rail line and an inch long fracture on the rail at the nose. I am mad at myself for rushing but I need to shake it off and fix it.

Has anyone out there had a similar problem happen?

I was thinking I should slowly and carefully sand the drips and get my rails smooth. Poss use a surform on the drips carefully? Then once I have the drips and rails dealt with, deal with this ding. As the board is tinted im unsure what to do here. Maybe just sand it down a bit and mix some gloss resin and chopped fibers? q cell? paste it in there, sand it down. Then sand down the whole board back to 150 and re gloss? Do i need to re - gloss?

As allways any help from anyone with experience in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I think Ill have a beer and deal with it tommorrow when ive calmed down! Thanks again.

Can u post some pics?

I’ll tell you how to fix 1st and then tell you why it happened 2nd.  Don’t use a Surform on the drips.  Use a file.  Knock down the drips and then take some 180  and 220 to the rail drips and runs.  Tape off the rail to gloss the bottom in such a way that your bottom drips and sanding   will be covered by the bottom  gloss.  But before you gloss the bottom , fix the ding using 4 oz. and a filler coat and sand to 220.  Gloss the bottom and that should do it.  Why it happened??  Never walk away from a gloss coat.  Babysit it until the resin has jelled.  If you are in too big a hurry to babysit it;  Don’t start it.  Also-- I only use Reichold Gloss resin…  I don’t know what kinda shit those guys are sellin’ up there , but if it isn’t Reichold ;  Don’t even bother.

A good trick to preventing your board from falling off your glassing racks is to put tape inside out on the T bars of the stands were your wrap tape around  the ends.  Tacky side of tape facing out.  This grips onto the board slightly and prevents slippage. Just dont leave a board on the stands multiple days in a row because the adhesive on the tape can come off onto the board.  Good luck!
