Gloss Coating Air Brush Paint

Hi Gang,

Every now and then when doing a color match via airbrushing the sanding coat, the airbrush paint will wrinkle a bit after the gloss coat has been applied. It doesn’t do it right after applying. It seems to happen several minutes after the gloss coat has been applied. Also, it doesn’t do it all the time…just every now and then. .

Any thoughts on why it’s happening? Any personal experience with this?

I’m wondering if:

gloss coat is to hot

gloss coat is to thick

paint is to thin (However I don’t generally thin the paint. I used Createx straight from the bottle.)

paint hasn’t fully dried. ( I generally wait overnight before polish coating it. Maybe I need to wait 24 hours?)

maybe mekp catalyzer eats away at that type of un cured paint causing it to wrinkle, just thinking take a piece of glass fabric and saturate it let cure then air brush it

then in like an hour or so hot coat it then on the other side air brush wait 48 hours or something like that then hotcoat look at both results? might be worth a shot?

Don’t use Createx for color on the sanded hotcoat if you’re going to gloss over it.  Our glosser has threatened to kill me if I ever use the stuff again. He’s had to squeegee the gloss off, let whats left on the board kick, then light sand and re-gloss. Switch to Liquitex, Nova Color or Golden Acrylics. I don’t know what’s in Createx paints that makes it react’s with gloss resin…The stuff works fine when painted on the foam.

Interesting. I was told specifically to use Createx by a glasser in the area (san clemente). Anyways, I’ll try some of the others you mentioned. Can’t hurt. The odd thing is it doesn’t happen all the time. It’s been really hit or miss. Frustrating as hell!

It works fine on the foam.  Ask Chelu at Chelu Glassing in San Clemente. He’s the glosser I mentioned in my previous post. Specifically the Createx Transparent Yellow that’s given him all the whose.

Howzit atomized, I used Createx on foam with little problems but it is a cheap paint. I would have to add extra acrylic to it or it would bleed some when glassing over it, but never used it on sanded hot coat before a gloss. Like you said, use Nova,Liquitex or Golden. Golden is made for airbrushing. Aloha,Kokua

Just wanted to report back. I got some LIQUITEX, tried it out and it worked fine. I was looking at the GOLDEN Acrylic however on the back it said not to use for an airbrush-some type of hazardous material in it so I figured it would be easier to just stay away from it. (Maybe they have one specifically for airbrushing that you don’t need to thin out?).

Thanks gang!

Howzit larry, I have seen Golden in one of my airbrush catalogs and it comes ready to spray but for the amount in the container it always seemed cost prohibitive to me. One thing you have to be careful about is if you have to thin out the paint you can thin it out so there is not enough acrylic left so you need to add just plain acrylic to the paint or you will have bleeding problems. Aloha,Kokua

For years the only paint I would use was liquitex. Never had a problem. I have heard nothing but good things about Nova.  One thing I always do is give the paint a few minutes with a hair dryer.  The crazing could be the result of having to much moisture in the paint. The surface might seem dry to the touch yet underneath it still has a small amount of moisture.

golden paint is expensive but also very high quality paints.  Loo around for a a fine art store that will give you a nice discount for repeat business. I try to stay away from the big retail chain hobby stores and deal with stores that supply artist 1st then then scrape book crowd 2nd.

Check out Utrecht art online. They have good pricing on most paints.

Howzit artz,Nova is a totally ifferent kind of acrylic paint. For one thing is stay flexable even after ti dries. The pro painter I watched use it added very little water to it and also added some poster paint to it to help it dry faser then shot it at about 80LBs PSI and did most of it in one coat, Totally different han I had learned but worked great and just shows there is more than one way to skin a cat or paint a blank. Aloha,Kokua

Kokua, are you sure? I was told that you should skin the Blank Then paint the cat? Yeah bad joke I need more coffee.

Howzit artz, I know there were some errors in my spelling (darn lap top key board) but now I am confused. I was talking about painting a shaped blank.Aloha,Kokua
