This may not be his way but I have done it this way…
polish the whole board, then tape off and go back and sand matte.
The reason for a whole board polish is that once you go back with a soft pad and create the matte, you will not have swirl marks in your matted area.
I used a soft 3m sandpad to matte the whole board.
I did a few boards a few years back for a friend and they turned out pretty good.
Maybe someone here knows his formula but this will get it done.
Same process, but I used a scotch bride pad for the mat finish.
3M. ScotchBrie pad. Maroon or Grey under an Orbital Sander.
