I am in the process of restoring an old stinger pin tail. The board flew off a car roof in th late 70s and sat untill I picked it up. Initially I fixed all the damage and tried ot out. All the gloss was sanded off the top and bottom. the bottom was painted with acrylic paint and glossed using standard gloss resin. In a pint of resin,10 cc of styrene and about 5cc of mek were used,it took 2 hrs to gel!!!. The gloss came out great and I attributed the slow set up to to much styrene and to little mek. This weekend I did.the top which also has acrylic art work on the old hot coat/gloss. This time I used 12 ounces od gloss,5cc of styrene and 10 cc mek. The resin flowed nicely and I expected a 10 minute flash,10 minutes later the resin started to orange peel on.the rails. It eventually went off 15 minutes later and left gooey unhardened areas. Ive been away from the surfboard biz for about 20 years and a little rusty, but I've never run.into this before. Years ago ,we went from a flamable mek to.a non flamable one and had weird problems. Any pne have any insight to.what might be causing my problem?. The rest of the deck and the bottom came out like glass
It helps to have ideal temperatures (80-90 degrees F) and low humidity when glossing. A dustless wind-free environement is good. Fresh resin? Kokua recommended a shot of surfacing agent and styrene in his 'secret' formula. Run the mix through a fine mesh strainer even if it takes awhile.
Generally speaking, slabbing usually occurs when the glosser left too much resin on the board and it's taking too long to kick. The crown of the rails creates a nearly vertical surface from which resin loves to slab off if left too thick.
The resin seemed fresh, plink and thin. I did strain it and added styrene. I try not to add extra wax as its a pia to sand off later and it gums sand paper up. I agree it took way to long to go off. Temp today was 74 deg and it was muggy, but then again I built boards for years in Fl and uts always muggy. To 12 ounces of resin I used 10 cc of mek, which should have been enuff. Does this sound right? It seems as though the the gloss resin doesnt kick as quick as reg ular silmar, mixed to the same ratio. Still listening, anybody? And thanks…
johnmellor pretty much hit the general issues people have with gloss. Gloss is a fickle resin that really does need ideal conditions unlike regular 249A or any of it’s variations. Sand it off and try again!
ok when this ocurs it sometimes from finish resin not having correct amount of additives to counteract this you can mix half filler and half finish if it still does this add a touch of wax and styrene hope this helps.
“orange peeling” is usually caused by one of these conditions. Too much catalyst, direct sunlight, high ambient temp, or too much air flow (wind). Were you working outdoors?
The sticky spots would be from either too much brushing, or excessive catalyst so that the SA didn’t rise before the stuff kicked.
Thanks to all for your advice. After sanding it all off and redoing the stripes, success was achieved. I suspect a combination of factors, mostly to thick of a gloss and not enuff mek along with a the humidity, which a few of you pointed out. I seem to remember mek being hotter back in the 80s. Again thanks for all your help and quick responses.

glad it came out all right. Gloss resin is fussy… because of that I try to always use a fresh clean (disposable) bucket for gloss resin… just one less thing to worry about…
First I set a tape line on the rails and on the top of the yellow/white stripe.I sanded the area between the tape first with an 80 grit disk on a yellow power pad to get the really nasty stuff off, then a 120 grit disk, then 120 by hand and the 220 wet.I blended the bead from the bottom smooth about a 1/4" below the tape line and redid the blue to the tape line along with the stripe. Then regloss to the top of the stripe and bottom tape line.Taking the bead off requires care and it hasnt been buffed yet,so I will have to be extra careful. I bought the board to ride(and it was in really bad shape when I got it},and fixed so I could, but it was so danm ugly I was gett’n dirty looks on the beach!! Then again the looks could have been over it only has one fin!!
