gloss resin

I am getting ready to gloss coat and was curious if I have to add any extra wax to gloss resin? I have blue lam resin and pink gloss resin…I am assuming that the gloss resin already has the styrene wax in it. Thanks for any feedback! Cheers

If it says gloss resin on the can then you do not want to add anything except the MEKP. You want to kick it a little faster then you do your hotcoat. Gloss resin is real thin, and will run off the board and not coat if you don’t mix it hot enough. Remember it is not only there for looks but to coat any sand throughts, so you want it to not all run off the board before it kicks. Good luck

Howzit seaweed, There is extensive info in the archives on glossing resin formulars, I find that thinning 10% with styrene and then adding another 3% of SA to the gloss resin makes for a really smooth finish. The smoother it comes out means less sanding when you rub it out.Aloha, Kokua

This question came up a while back, and I’ve been using the SA and styrene per Kokua’s proportions since then. It’s worked great on all my gloss jobs (full boards and repairs). I cut the tape lines with 320 and sand the surfaces starting with 400 ending with 600. I always had a lot of zits and bubbles in the gloss before, now they always come out great. Thanks again Kokua.

Kokua,

Is that formula of yours for converting lam. resin into glossing resin?

Howzit Cleanshape, I use this formular with reichold gloss resin. Aloha,Kokua
Howzit Pete, You are welcome, It's amazing how adding a few extra chemicals to your gloss resin can improve the end product. I have a couple of customers who like my gloss work to the point that they have me just take off the resin lap and rub out the rail. Aloha, Kokua

Hey Seaweed… I use Kokua’s formula in my gloss, it helps me from getting separation. Glossing is harder than one would think…

kokua…

what exactly does adding the styrene and surfacing agent to the gloss resin do? i use silmar resin, and it lays pretty flat all on its own. will your chemical concoction help to improve that showroom shine when its polished? also, what ratio of catalyst to resin (or your finished resin recipe) do you use? thanx…

Thanks to all for the input…unfortunately I didnt get back online before I did the gloss coat. It took a while to kick due to some serious humidity but turned out ok. Kokua…i’ll try your gloss coat recipe on the next one. Ill post a pic or two of my first board soon as I figure out how to. It has been a great learning experience and I cant wait to start number two! Thanks to all who keep this great site up and running!Cheers and Mahalo to all!
