Glossing. When shineys turn sticky.

Sways,

Ive glossed 20 boards since iv'e started building boards and never had a problem.

I glassed two boards recently and the wax didnt rise properly. The surface has a slight gummyness to it and although there was zero air flow in my glasing room, there is a faint sign of channels. Very faint. But when starting my 320 sanding procedure I got the tiny pock gum balls on my paper like theres no wax.

Procedure: Stirred my 16 oz of gloss resin first then set it of with 40 ccs of catalyst in a 72 degree room. Then the standern brush on and two cross strokes finishing with strokes lenght wise.  Im not sure the humidity at the time on glassing.  Any clue why the gloss gummed up? Bad resin? Im sanding it all down to start again and was planning to add some wax but have used this batch of resin within the last two months and have had to problem up til now.

Thanks,

Bob

Channels sounds like it slabbed off. Did you use too much gloss, or i should say didn't pull enough off after it was bushed out.   I bet it only happened on the deck..right deck dome / rail break...not the bottom?

If so, it sounds like too much gloss on the flats thats getting pulled towards the rails as it kicks.  It sheers off like an iceberg exposing the unwaxed resin below.

As you get better at glossing you get faster at laying it out and getting it smooth.  Now the issue is getting the right amount on the board.  Too little and it wont flow, too much and it brain slabs with as little as a fart in the room or the slamming of a door.  Good glossing is witchcraft i tell ya.

Most severve was on the the bottom and not as bad on the top. Most severe was on the nose rocker on the bottom. Even  through the center of the board with slight concave it shows the same problem. There were no icebergs of the rails as if I applied t much resin.  I really felt like I put it on lean but maybe not.... I really thought I had it wired but.....Witchcraft for sure.

maybe try using less catalyst to give the resin more time to level out and allow the wax to rise to the surface.

40 cc seems like too much for the 16 oz of resin at 72 degrees.

…I think Grasshopper is right

also, 16 oz is too much for a gloss coat

Thanks resinhead, grasshopper, and reverb.  You guys are all absolutely right. My orignal glossing effort I mixed up 16 ozs of resin and used about 12 ozs. This time I mixed up 8 ozs and added 8ccs of wax and 12 ccs of styrene and layed it on much thinner. Both sides came out perfect. Thanks for the help

Bob

Howzit mudybech,!0% styrene and 5% wax and for 16ozs of glossng resin 25 cc's catalyst should do the trick.Aloha,Kokua

I think we should read “10% styrene” if I refer to previous posts by Kokua about the same topic. Just a typo, I guess.

Thanks Kokua!

Ive been meaning to try your famous recipe. Thanks for the repost. I hope your doing well.
