Glue joint for XPS rails to EPS core?

Can anyone recommend a glue that will allow enough time to attach rails but be easily sanded so as to keep from butchering the soft eps. have tried thin coat of epoxy and microballons but its to tough. foaming pu foams to quick and i was gonna try gorilla glue but i hear thats hard to sand to. foaming pu of some sort would be good cos it so similar to eps sanding wise.

thanks.

this sounds like a job for Greg Loehr… gl10@aol.com

Gorilla glue works nicely. It sands O.K. Remember that it needs moisture to cure. Also it expands, so if you put it on thick, it might create pressure, voids etc.

Don’t ask me how I know this, but if you thin it with zylene, it will disolve both EPS and PU foam. Yikes!!!

I’ve heard that you can use zylene to thin epoxy. Don’t ask how I learned not to do this on the lamination coat. Yikes again!

So many mistakes, so little time…

Mike over at Shooting Blanks showed me a GG trick so you don’t put it on too thick and you get an even spread.

Just use one of those little 3" paint rollers. Roll it all out thin and even on both sides. it should look light amber…like thinly spread honey.

It will give you enough time to place your rails where you want them then clamp them down.

I have not found it terribly hard to sand…then again I usually plane it down past the funky stuff first.

I think I might just do up a blank like that…thanks for the inspiration.

Maybe MDI core with XPS rails…just cuz I can! LOL

I hope this helps

rooglue or

foamfusion from hotwirefoamfactory

super long open time no stains and way safer but takes longer to set also tint-able

looks like elmers but it isn’t

an insiders secret so you didn’t hear it from me

Also Loctite Sumo brand PU cuts way easier than all the others and dries clear/white

Polystyrene-safe contact adhesive.

The join between the rails and the EPS is not critical.

The glue is stronger than the foam.

Quickest way to do single piece rails.

Give it a try, you’ll be laughing.

Hey thanks guys,

the info’s great.

where do you get your poly adhesive kit?

Hey Oneula, that sumo glue sounds like me. will try track some down. thanks for the insider tip!

Hey ST,

thanks bro, i dont know what a sheet a dow is worth over there, but its pretty cheap here and makes for a good water tight rail band for us home guys. actually we all see that drewtang pretty much swears by it.

Thanks ES, i was gonna use g glue, what sort of texture is it like when its setup? sorta like foam? sounds like me, i have learnt so many ways not to build a surfboard! haha

cheers
