Glueing Foam

Kicking around an idea of glueing up some foam blocks in order to get a blank big enough for a sup. Anyone that might have some experience of glueing foam? I’m curious the best type of adhesive to use in this process. Thanks

I’ve done it for a longboard (that I never finished).

PU glue works fine, you can even hotwire it!

You can see the glue lines:

It’s really cheap! (20euro’s for a blank)

But do it better! try to use as less glue as possible and try to glue so that it stays at the inside of the blank, it planes and sands not so good compared to the foam, so you get an uneven deck/bottom if you do not watch out! But it’s not that hard to make it good.

Ditto the PU glue for strength and issues when sanding through. I covered mine with balsa, so I didn’t care about the lines.

I used Elmer’s Pro Bond Wood Glue and it worked just fine. As already mention, use as little as possible, since then it’s easier to shape and also shows less. Also center the majority of the glue in the center of the blank, then it’s easier to shape the rails and no glue lines. You don’t need much glue since it’s only to hold the blank together while shaping, then the fiberglass takes over.

i get blocks of EPS from a local company. i get 2.5lb EPS in 8X4X2ft blocks and have them cut it in half with their hotwire machine. so i then have (2) 8X2X2ft blocks and plane down poplar stringers i get from home depot at a local milling company. 10" wide planks are usually good enough for 2 blanks.

i make rocker templates using ASP3000 and masonite, screw them to the side, use a hotwire machine i made with a car battery charger, cut it down the middle with a circular saw and use the other clean edge from the EPS company’s hotwire cut then just use gorilla glue and ratcheted straps with the stringer (also cut from the rocker template)

once its all said and done, i get my own custom rockers and blanks that are strong as well for 20 bucks.

if you spackle the EPS, it will reduce resin need (and weight) and im crankin out my own boards for 130 bucks (without fins).

oh…i got far away. i use gorilla glue. thats shits ridiculous. ( beware of it expanding as it sets though)

hope it helps.

I use regular elmer’s white glue to glue up blanks. Never had a problem…yet.
