Okay I am gluing up my wooden skateboard finally… I will start a build thread in a few once i accumulate enough pics to post something worthwhile. Right now I am gluing the slats of grain cedarwood together using titebond III… I have 5 clamps I am using (the skateboard will be 57inches long… so I think 5 clamps is enough but I know the woodworking mantra “can never have too many clamps”.)…
Now on the back of the bottle the directions state to remove clamps after 30 mins?.. I have 5 slats to glue up together, and I am doing them in groups of 2, so does that mean I can remove clamps now that 30 mins have gone by and attempt to glue the next slat on? The wood is slightly bent in some areas so there is uneven force, which is why I am nervous about removing them so early… usually I want to leave it for 24 hours but the directions say specifically not to do that… soooooo…
come on i know a million people have used titebond here… no one has any input?
I got impatient, unclamped, glued next slat, seems okay. hopefully i didnt mess anything up, Im going to be fiberglassing in between the top and bottom layer of slats so i think itll be enough reinforcement…hopefully…
What is the clamping and drying time of Titebond Wood Glues? For most of our wood glues, we recommend clamping an unstressed joint for thirty minutes to an hour. Stressed joints need to be clamped for 24 hours. We recommend not stressing the new joint for at least 24 hours. For Titebond Polyurethane Glue, we recommend clamping for at least forty-five minutes. The glue is completely cured within 6 hours.
If your joints aren’t stressed (nice flat, even contact), not like pressing concave or camber (stressed), go with the label. Couldn’t hurt to give it 6 hours if you have some doubts. Otherwise go with the 24 hours for max strength.
IanT, I glue stuff up almost everyday. Use Titebond II, just as good as III but cheaper. Edge to edge glueing wood needs at least 12 hrs to cure fully. I always try to plan for 24 hrs to be safe. I don't know what the label is talking about with 1/2 an hour, far too short of time. Of course in warm temps 80 deg. plus, it takes less time but no less than 8 hrs. It needs to turn that translucent yellow color before you can take the clamps off. Good Luck.
thanks! Yeah I thought that was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too little time… I was planning on a 24 hour clamp job anyway… cant wait til this thing is done, its coming together like i pictured it in my mind!
you guys roooock and i def will try the II next time if its just as good… i like cheaper
Ian, I've been using Titebond since they came out with it. Stick with II and you won't go wrong. Also, five clamps in 57 inches is plenty, even if you don't have tight joints.
sweeeeet so I guess Im headed in the right direction… and PS… thank you to everyone for suggesting harbor freight for clamps, I stopped by a local shop and got all 5 12" clamps, and a pair of workmans gloves for $20 … and the register guy rang me up with a bunch of coupons and actually GAVE me a set of screwdrivers (not that I needed them…but hey free is goooood)…
So anyone who hasnt heard of harbor freight… yeahhhh its kick asssssssssssssssssssss and my new favorite store!
If i went to home depot the same stuff wouldve costed me like $70
