Goin' to Kauai

I have been a swaylurker for quite a while and have enjoyed the vast repository of knowledge offered over the years. My boards probably wouldn’t even float if it wasn’t for swaylocks. So, a hearty thanks to all of the Barnfields, Spitzers, Daniels, Kokua’s and  others out there sharing info and feedback. After several years of shaping hiatus Im finally getting a space ready in the garage again and hope to be building a few frankensteins in the near future.

Next week we’re (wife and kid) off to Kauai with another family and staying in Princeville for a week. Family being the keyword here, Im not going have tons of time to run off and surf. In fact I’ll probably just rent a board or buy a craigslister instead of giving $500 to United. I don’t really know a thing about Kauai except Hanalei. It would be great to get a few spots that would be quick hits from the Princeville area & bodysurfing spots as well. Wouldn’t mind giving smaller kalihiwa a shot unless its locals only city. If a south comes in I’ll probably be able to steal away for the day and will have a rental car. I might be mistaken but is there some right hand sand point on the south side of the island? As for my surfing ability, I have done a fair bit of travel to some of the worlds premiere spots. Ive never been accused of surfing like Slater but I have a decent surfing ability where people usually don’t stop paddling and point and laugh.

We’ll be doing some of the usual tourist stuff like hiking a portion of the Na Pali coast but recommendations for other sights are appreciated. I haven’t been to Hawaii since 89 so Im looking forward to it. Back then I had a great time surfing Makaha in the serious infancy stage of my surfing. I was so clueless as to how lineups worked and looking back I can’t believe I never got shit for getting in the way and going over the falls for a week. Boy, thats aloha but Im sure the locals were glad when I left. I know how things have since changed and how Kauai has a different vibe than Oahu and recall the anti photo policy some years back. I’ll mind my p’s and q’s and just hope to get a few waves! Thanks for your input guys

“Aloha” indeed.

I love those islands…  Catch one for me, and I’ll think about y’all from the mainland…

Hanalei,, Pine trees,, small but fun on a longboard,, surf schools are there

Nawiliwili,,,, in front of Dukes ,,,Ambrose can be spotted there at times

Poipu,, south cresent nice point break ,, lefts and rights

always be patient and show respect

edit: these are not any secret spots, I wont give those away, you have to find for yourself, or befriend a local.

I always showed deference to the Kauai locals, even when I was taking off outside of them (calling out “you goin’”?), and they were civil and very generous with waves in return.  Being a geezer with a white beard probably also bought me some slack.  A little respect and acknowledgement that you’re on their turf goes a long way, in my experience.  Yes, there were a couple of hostiles who had no use for visiting haoles.  Greedy, aggro outsiders, arrogant, flashy  showboats, snakes and weasels can expect to get thumped, but that’s true many other places besides Hawaii.

Aloha District_4, Hate to break it to you but now is the wrong time of the year for the North Shore here on Kauai. You might score some Tunnels if there is a east swell but it's been pretty calm lately except we did get a little bump today but it will probably be gone tomorrow. Right now I am living almost right in ront of Tunnels and can see it from my front porch. The only problem is I am playing musical houses since there are 3 homes on the property and I stay in whatever one is empty. I can give you a cell # or ne that takes messages and can give you a surf report but thr best would be to PM me and I will give you a ph# and then give me a ph# where you are staying in Pville. This is the time for surfing the South Side. Aloha,Kokua

Just watched a movie about Kauai and the Na Pali trail.  It's called "Perfect Get Away".  Check it out on dvd before you go.   Make sure your wife watches it.

No, I wasn’t expecting anything much outta the north pac this time of year, just hoping for a little windswell slop to fool around in thats close to our accommodation. We didn’t have too many options as far as location with our time share. I looked at some places around Waikiki and the prospect of Ala Moana but decided I’d rather not even surf than deal with those crowds.  We were interested in something way more low key anyway.

Hopefully a south will roll through- any south swell spots you can recommend? Thanks for the info Kokua- I’ll pm you at some point during the week. McDing- great idea - got any plane crash movies to add to that!

Pakala…for south swell…great left point set up…would be 2nd on my list…a visit with Ambrose would be # 1…and BTW…he can fix ya up with a board to rent and anything ya need to know bout island.

For Pakala…get up at 4am…drive there…might take an hour…surf couple hours…back to Princeville by 8am to cook brecky for the crew!

k… lahina noon soon…

what day?

one july 4 on a hike this lady said

today is the day the sun is directly over head.

from that day I have always calculated

the over head day was so.

then I on another year heard

that it was called Lahina noon

another year I heard the schedule

and each island was directly under

the sun orbit on a different day.

any body know?

I guess I will look it up next

but I saw maui in your profile and

thought of lahina noon…

Hawaii and other locations south of the Tropic of Cancer

receive the sun's direct rays as the apparent path

of the sun passes overhead before the solstice

and retreats to the south afterwards. At the exact time

of Lahaina Noon, which can occur anywhere from

12:17 to 12:43 p.m., objects that stand straight up

(like flagpoles, telephone poles, etc.) will not cast

a shadow. The most southerly points in Hawaii

experience Lahaina Noon on earlier and later dates

than the northern parts. Hilo on the Big Island

encounters the overhead sun around May 18 and July 24,

KahuluiMaui on May 24 and July 18,

Honolulu,Oahu on May 26 and July 15

and LihueKauai on May 31 and July 11.

Chosen in a contest sponsored by the Bishop Museum several years ago,

Lahaina Noon was the selected appellation because it means "cruel sun,"[3]

which is what the sun feels like when it is directly overhead.

these are the days that try one's skin

That's good!  Name it and claim it !   The rental car up on the highway shoulder is fair game.  Not necessary Bro!

I must admit I have neva heard of" Lahaina noon". But I DO know about that time of day, when the sun is directly overhead,“Kau ka La i ka Lolo”,the sun rests on the Brain,a time that Hawaiians considered in the Old Days as a time with great Mana,as the AKA,the shadow,is no longer visible, and has entered the PO’O,the head, the most sacred part of the body. That time is not on a special day,but any day.As far as LaHaina, that is indeed the cruelest sun,it really is a lot hotter right in Lahaina town.Best to be out surfing at Breakwall,Mala,Sharkpit, but these last few days,FLAAAAT.Been paddling oc-1 Maliko downwind runs,it’s that bad!
