hello all, Im heading back to california from north carolina and am going to be in big sur for couple of weeks. I did not want to take a board with me on the plane (we know how that goes) and I was wondering about the ease of getting a versatile shape in that area. I was hoping to do what I have done previously in mexico which would be to buy a board and then sell it back or trade prior to leaving and sucking up the difference in money. I can ride everything, from longdong noseriders to high performance short boards but was hoping to grab a fish, short egg, or maybe even a stubbie since I believe those boards can handle most conditions. Oh yea, if anyone in the area wants to get up for a surf and talk story, theory, etc., Im always down. My current project right now is a 5-10 quad fin diamond tail. wide, thin on the thickness, and flattened nose rocker for crappy east coast waves. Anyways, Ill be in the area Aug 30th to Sept. 12th.
i would suggest stopping by freeline design in santa cruz @ the corner of portola and 41st ave. and checking out their rentals. they have quite the selection of rentals and a bunch of used boards too, if that’s the route you want to go. they rent real surfboards - not just foamies.
yeah - let me know if you want to get together for a surf.
If you’re going to be in Big Sur check out Liquid Surf Shop in Pacific Grove 831 647-9283 / 156 Fountain Avenue PG. You can Google the address for a map. Sean. Brent, and Marc work at the store and they all surf whenever there’s waves. Lot’s of good boards used and new. They are very tuned to the Big Sur coast.
if you know what you want i say go to freeline in santa cruz… they have lots of real boards for rent… the boyz at liquid probably will be tight lipped about “down the coast” … just some advice… go with a little extra length and extra thickness… its juicy down there … i cant really see a fish workin down there ?? dont go with a crowd and not expect to be hassled … have fun !
Liquid Surf Shop is a good call. Much closer to Big Sur. I don’t know if they rent, but they have lots of used boards. Call them and ask. Sunshine and On The Beach are two other options. Both in Monterey. Thirty or so miles closer to your destination. I do believe they rent board, too. Mike
