Been using the 8ft 2 speed egg as a 2+1 but thinking in slapping a larger fin in the centre box and going single. I'm rarely in anything above shoulder/head high in pretty slack waves so wondered if a single would just give me more speed and a looser feel? The hull is subtle vee and quite sharp rails in the tail. Would I notice a big difference?
Try it and see. I have a 7'10'' that i change from thruster to single fin. Both very different. I dont surf 2+1 anymore, either thruster, or single. Im due to switch back to single. When going to a single, slow down and enjoy the glide, and get your weight down and over the rail to turn hard off the bottom.
I use an 8'' fluid foils dolphin, or a wavegrinder fin. Wavegrinder is a trip!!!, but the dolphin is awesome for trimming. MMmmmmm glide!
Hi Beerfan - do you notice much in the way of speed and looseness? Keep hearing that unless you are pumping thrusters they produce a bit more drag than needed. I'm more trim and glide so maybe single is a good bet for me.
You certainly won't have to pump it, especially an 8'2 egg. They are very good for trim and glide. They are slower to release off the top of a wave, but you'll get used it. They are not better or worse, just different.
Howzit frog, I have to know what you mean by a 2 speed egg, does it have an overdrive or a compound low on it. JUst joking but I am interested in the 2 speed thing. Aloha,Kokua
I think he means an 8'2'' speed egg. From my beer adled memory, a speed egg is a little more narrow than a normal egg.
Yeah 8ft 2inches speed egg. Basically the shape is a wee bit more streamlined in the nose area...bit more pulled in.

Kokua - mind you I do have two speeds....especially when it comes to paddling...slow and very slow!

Howzit frog, now that is a good one but I thought it was the board that had 2 speeds. I thin we all have 2 speeds minimum and I know Ihave paddle speed and catch te wave speed that is the hyper speed but without the arms flying. just fast deep strokes. I was useing a 2+1 on a longboard ,, then took the sid bites out ,, and the board felt like it was released from its restraints.
In larger waves it felt easier to paddle into them,,, less drag
longer fin for bigger/steeper days
Hi Ken.....I'm kinda torn on fin size due to differing advice. I'm around 200 pounds plus and 6ft tall.......the board's tail is around 15.5 wide so would I be looking at a 9inch fin? Some folk have said an 8 inch fin (due to 8ft board) but then others have said nahhh...your height and weight plus tail width for an egg would suggest a bigger fin especially if you are using it waist high and above. What do you reckon? Thanks.
