Styrofoam from Cane
Synbra develops renewable and biodegradable EPS
IsoBouw will develop roof panels from biodegradable Styrofoam. The foam is made of poly lactic acid that is extracted from sugar cane stalks, Cobouw said.
The physical properties are identical to EPS said the insulation manufacturer. Synbra developed the biodegradable polystyrene together with the Wageningen University. The developement of the foam went amazingly fast. In just two years we had a stable foam, which was named BioFoam.
The material can be incorporated into existing devices without adjustments. BioFoam was developed as a respond to questions from the packaging industry, since EPS was suffering from a bad environmental image. According to Noordegraaf this is unjustified, because next to paper and glass, EPS is the most recycled material in the Netherlands. Now the material is available IsoBouw will start to apply it in constructionmaterial, starting with roof panels.

I don’t know about weight or thickness (or availability) , but it sounds like a good opportunity when you want to build a “green” board.
