Gordon and Smith board too far gone?

I have a G&S board that someone traded. 6.6, single fin. He said that he had it custom built for himself in the 70’s. I couldn’t say no, so the board is now mine. It’s a mess. I am not sure if I should fix it up, or just give it up. My daughter wants to learn on it so she’d like me to fix it. I don’t think that I could afford to have someone re-do it: by the time they were done it would most likely cost the same as a new board. While I know that the name is awesome, and I am a huge fan of keeping the vintage stuff around, I don’t know enough about surfboard repair to know if it’s dimples and dings will make it un ridable.  I’d love some feedback on this board, if you have the time. Is it fixable? If I can’t do it, is there someone that would, or is it just a junk board?

welcome to Sways! Where are you located? There might be someone on here nearby to do a repair. A local shop would give you an estimate on simple repairs. You don’t need to do a restoration type job.

I’m in San Diego.  If you are close by I will make it all nice and pretty.  Payment is beer.

The board is in very good shape and will clean up with minimal surgery.

Thanks.  I am close to Santa Cruz, but I drive to San Diego every couple of months.  That would be so great!\

I’ll look into it, thanks!

ok then…keep in touch when you are in the area.

Ok I’ll say it them. Looks out ladie, resinheads is a dog.

It’s nothing special. Just a stock ’ 70s G and S. Have someone fix the open wounds so it is water tight. No need to fuss over it.

If you are in SC look up Ralph Headrick. Ace repair guy.

If the info on this card isn’t valid anymore, try Freeline Surf SHop. They should know his number, etc.

I was really, really happy with Ben Nelson, who works out of the same building as the Haut shop on Swift St. Masterful job, reasonable price, timely, and responsible- he apparently works every work day, regardless of whether it’s “on” or not.

And your board isn’t trashed at all, considering its age.

(Funny, there was a recent post from a teenager with a short board asking if he should get it to learn on, and there was some debate whether or not to go with it, or wait and get a longboard, which, practically speaking, is the easier route. I recommended the longboard approach, but honestly, I learned on a board like you have and I did just fine [I was 11 though!]. In this case… I think it’d be cool for your kid to learn on this vintage board. Harder than a longboard, but… very doable and just kind of bitchen!)
