gore tex vent?

Already checked the archives. No luck. I wanted to see if there is any updated info about the goretex vent. Does anybody know where to find the goretex vent used in Firewires? Or something similar?

Being someone who was once nicknamed “the absent minded professor” by my friends, I’d love to find a vent that I could never accidentally leave open.

Good question, I wish I could find one.

I think Hydro Epic uses a breathable vent-leash plug.Maybe Kendall would know.

The only other rumor I have heard is that Eva the board lady was trying to get a large order together so she could get some. This was a long time ago and I never did find out if she got any.

Some guys have made homemade ones that work. The Fire Wires that I have seen look like Bert’s old vents with a hole drilled in the middle.

Here is an idea of have been tossing around in my head.

Just lay out a few patches of fibreglass and cut out the disc and the ring.

It wouldn’t have to be circular I just thought it would look smoother.

The top disc is to protect the gortex from wax and getting damaged.

The ring is just a spacer to separate the goretex from the disc.

The problem is the only Goretex I can find is a repair patch for a jacket.

It has an adhesive back to it and I’m not sure if the adhesive glue will breathe.

Does anyone out there know if the adhesive will cause a problem?

cheers, JD

I’m expecting some sample vents any day now.

Minimum order is 100.00 but I don’t know yet how many that will be.

If they are what I expect, they should do the trick. They are small (less than 1" diameter) button-like gizmos with a vent hole and Gore-Tex membrane.

If there is any interest, I will order 100.00 worth. Details to follow when I get them.

Personally I think venting is a complete waste of time. First of all, all boards that I know of have only one vent. Lets say that water gets in through a ding at the front of the board and your vent is in the tail. Why water can’t just escape where it came in from in the first place is beyond me. What’s even more beyond me is how the water is going to travel from one end of the board to the other end where the vent is? Of course the blank could gas up which probably means that your using XPS. The simple solution to that one is don’t use XPS. Just adds up to vents being just another fad that some idiot cooked up.

Thanks for the offer John! I’ll be the first to take you up on that offer. e-mail me the particulars for 5 of the vents. I vent all my EPS boards, especially the HD 1 pounders!

Hydro Epic has a proprietary vent that they’re having made somewhere. If you call Pete at the number on their website, you may be able to talk him into selling you one. Salomon has one too. I’ve got one of theirs somewhere, but I’m not sure how to get more.

I get the feeling that FW uses some thing like this:

With this:

FWIW, here is a diagram of the samples I’ve requested…

Hey John,

Any chance you could give the name of the supplier?

I doubt they’ll ship to New Zealand, but it’s worth a look.

I’ve be trying (half-heartedly i’ll admit) to find a supplier for a while.

Cheers mate!

Kit

hey kit

basically they are manufactured by goretex

there is an australian distributer of goretex products

goretex vents are used in electronics, consumables and chemical containers

food container, weather proof cases etc etc

the cheapest type of goretex vent is prolly only worth 2 bucks or so

the guy trying to sell sailboard type vents for 50$ nz is pulling your chain

he probably buys them for a 1/4 of that

from what i understand

goretex clothing craps out after a couple of seasons in salty windy conditions

the vents would need to be replaced eventually

i believe that the plastic screw vents to be cheap and excellent

and easily replaced

and easily tightened with a fingernail if you forgot to close it and notice it down at the waters edge or something

a hole with wax in it works in a similar way

if the board gets hot enough to balloon and delam

the wax will melt and push out like a little sausage

releasing the build up of air

the vents should be placed on the deck at eye level

that way you never forget to close it

vents are an outstanding idea for a surfboard

i can crack my vent and leave my board in a hot car

and never have to worry about a delam

i post cure my boards at about 50 degree celsious

so it will be thermally stable up to around 55 to 65 dc

pu/pe will eventually deteriorate under this sort of abuse

i vent my plain eps boards as well

it removes any stress about leaving a board in car or hot sun

and creates an easy way to remove any absorbed water through a hole

so makes a board easier to repair

it is also great for high temp postcures without having to use a vacuum bag

and can be used to check the board for leaks when finished and during maintenance checks

i remove all wax from my boards every month or so and check it over

i check the bottom and rails over once a week

each to there own eh

some kids leave there bikes on the lawn

some kids leave theres in the shed

some people maintain there cars

others drive them till they die

the reason why we have classic cars is because of the people that looked after them

Hey Paul,

Are you using those on your hollows? If so how have they worked for you and where are you getting them from? They look like they’d work pretty well for surfboard applications.

I’m curious if these are three different models of the vent:

IP65 - Water jets
IP67 - 1 meter water submersion for 30 minutes
IP69K - High pressure spray

If so the IP69K would probably be the best bet, as the vent will probably be submersed for longer than 30 minute periods.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingress_protection_rating

Doesn’t really give any info about submersing IP69K though.

there seems to be a lot of content on this site that is beyond you mate.

Ummmm… The vent is for air pressure. Seeing how GoreTex wouldn’t pass water anyway…

-Samiam

it hurts a bit if you slip

but i think it will be next big thing in venting

One reason to consider a gore-tex o-ring in your own home made vent is that it would be flush deck.

Hi Deanbo -

I guess there are pressure relief vents to prevent delams and then there are drain plugs to remove water?

I agree with Paul. I’m even starting to vent my 2 lb foam singlefins. I find that I don’t undo the vent unless I know the board is going to be in a high stress situation, I think the benefits still the slight cosmetic issues. I would love to find something better than the plastic ones, but the seem to do the best job for the best price. Regardless, I have a lifetime supply so I doubt I’ll change

and i cant imagine ordering an extras for a fair while either

yeah i hardly ever use mine

just 2 months a year in summer in the car mainly

or in an aircraft hold

i started venting(never really had a need) when i took some boards to aussie

and realized that i want to go to a hot and tropical surf destination this year

yeah and the whole blow the water out thang
