Goretex breathable vent source

Does anybody out there know of anyone offering anything like this for sale. After much searching I’ve been stumped.

many thanks.

I seem to remember Paul Jensen and Bill Barnfield posting some home made versions on here a while ago, do a search see what you come up with, or PM them if that doesn’t work.

Besides Gortex, there are a number of “waterproof/ breathable” fabrics such as Nano-Pel, HyVent, Ultrex, Extreme 3-Layer, EPIC by Nextec, Drilite Extreme, XALT, Avalite, etc.

Prototype samples can sometimes be obtained at no cost from the manufacturers… if you speak to the right persons.

Or check with the following for more info/ swatches:

Also, thrift stores often have waterproof breathable jackets, ponchos, vests, hats, etc. for cheap that can be cut up to access sections of specific materials.

There’s a lot of other systems, but they work differently. Goretex, or eVent would be the only ones you’d want, the’re PTFE membranes, a lot of the others are coated fabrics which have a lower hydrostatic head. Gore make repair patches which’d be the best thing if you want to make your own plugs.

Do you have a cite for some table showing the air permeability of either fabric? I’d be concerned about whether sufficient cfm could be passed through a vent of area “x”. I did some googling, but what few quantitative results showed up were worthless, citing “x” cfm without reference to area, while the germane measurement must obviously be stated as “x cfm per y sq in” or such, and preferably also include the pressure differential (e.g, 9 cfm per sq in @ 10 psi). It would be sorta academic to know that the air that delammed your deck did eventually find its way to the outside :->

I’ve not got any proper data. I worked for about 2 years in a climbing shop until recently, so know as much as the reps tell us (so it should probably all be taken with a pinch of salt). both goretex and event are PTFE membranes, they’ll stand a hydrostatic head of around 20M, that’s what I was thinking’s important, as PU coated fabrics (the cheaper ones) will take about 8 or 9M, and tend to leak when they fail. eVent was made for air filtration units (BHA-Tex) originally I think, and has a slightly different structure, that allows better gaseous transfer but is still waterproof, it’s not been around as long as Goretex, is better in Jackets(IMO), and from what I know’d be better for venting HWS. Let me know if anyone manages to get a sample out of them.

Here's a vent I made following Dale's suggestion...
I got some Gore-Tex samples, a brass cap nut, a brass screw, and a treaded insert...
The insert was fitted in the board...
The cap nut had a very small hole drilled in it's tip...
The brass screw was drilled lengthwise, then the head was cut off...
The Gore-tex was cut to a circle slightly larger than the screw diameter...
The Gore-Tex was placed into the cap nut...
The brass screw with the hole in it was threaded into the cap nut... tightly...
The whole assembly is what is in the picture...
I did one like that...Too bulky for my taste...It worked though...

No help on suppliers, but here’s an interesting thread on it:

Forgot about that thread. Based on the variety of experiences, I’d say that the ability to pass air is not an issue. Thanks!

Daniel,

A month or so ago I was reading a post on boardlady.com where she or someone was asking if anyone wanted to go in on some goretex valves.

She does some incredible repairs. She’s got serious talent. She’s tight with the sailboard people and I think valves are more widely used in sailboards. You should check her site and maybe post on her bulletin board.

Good luck.
