Great way to shape first surfboard

Hey guys,

I’m from Europe and have always wanted to shape a surfboard. If possible a timber one. Easier said than done, there’s so many different timbers out there from Balsa to Paulownia and being located in Europe makes it hard to get your hands on large section sizes. After crossing off one timber at a time due to different issues -weight (Paulownia) or difficulties when glassing - I ended up with balsa. Searched the web and found www.balsasurfboardsriley.com where I ordered their shaping DVD. I ended up ordering the balsa from them as well although they are based in Australia. The balsa arrived after 2 1/2 weeks and I started. I ran into trouble here and there but all in all in went pretty smooth (check out the pics). I really enjoyed working with the timber and shaping the board. But the best part of it was taking the board out for the very first time in 3 foot perfection - I was hooked, stoked and happy. So good to ride a board which you have made yourself! I am still full of endorphins and wanted to encourage everyone who’s thinking about making their own board - GO FOR IT!

see you out there

David

your board looks great! I actually just picked up my wood today from the local lumberyard and am about to start my first hollow wooden board(jensen method), which will be my second homemade board. Can’t wait to start!

That’s a very nice board you made! You’r right when it comes to riding a board that you made, you get twice the stoke when it performs well.I have various popouts,6’6 webber fatburner,6’2 quad firewire swallow tail,a few surftech fishes etc…and in the end my go to board is the one I shaped myself. It’s ugly as sin(my first and only board I’ve ever shaped) but I never miss with it and it’s fast as hell.

no coils in the quiver jesus, you must be years behind!

ciao

ugly boards go faster.

by this logic MakeShape’s creation may be verrry slow…it’s beautiful.
