Greenough 10.0 fin

Well,  after 40 years in the shaping room I've finally started longboarding. Even though I've shaped countless, I've never shaped one for myself. I decided to do a 9-0 hull. This is one of the most beautiful boards I've ever seen. It rides like a typical shorter hull but more drawn but with that great forward trim. Not terribly fast but haven'y gotten it in any juice, however the steeper sections it finds the spot and fits well. Anyway, the questionis does anyone have any ffedback on going from a 9.0 to a 10.o Greenough fin. I wouldnt mind a bit more drive.

is this a 2+1 setup? i feel like that fin would be better suited in a 2+1 and keep it  9", it seems if it was just a single fin that you will most likely loose alot of drive.

Increase base width, and fin area, not fin depth.     You will be happier.   (IMO)

can't picture running a 10" fin in 2+1 setup.  Must be very far forward from tail block.  Is this common practice when building hulls?

Bill's recommendation sounds solid.  More base= More drive.  Flex is tricky but fun when you get placement dialed.  Joel had a clean10"template with some flex, not sure if FU still makes it.

Yes the 10 is still small at the tip and has good flex pattern. The base is larger than the 9 and I think this is where the difference is an improvement would be drive wise. Hulls are just tricky boards.

As far as longboard fins go that I’ve used.  I ride a Infinity RNR 10’.  I used the 2plus1 setup, then went to a rake fin, still wasn’t happy.  Then tried a pivot fin, which was better than the previous two.  But now I have a FCS 10" Fat Boy Fluid Foils fin.  It has a thicker base, so you get the drive, and its skinnier in the middle then fat at the tip.  It drives, and still very responsive on the rail.  If you can check one out, I would highly recommend it.

I have a 10’ greenough in a 9’2 single fin cooper malibu foilI ride a lot.  It’s a heavier board so needs a hand with turns. Works well. I get moderate drive and smooth turns + noserides a bit (though not as well as with a fin with more area).  I tried the 9’ greenough in it to begin with and it didn’t have any drive to speak of, and board felt a bit disconnected from the wave.  The 10’ is a good comprimize, the board is still loose enough that it turns.  With a 9.5 fin with much more area and a bigger tip, it felt too stiff and tracky.  Can only speak for myself, but I would say that the 10’ grenough has much less area than a comparable 10’, 9.5’.  It’s more like a conventional 9 or 9.5.

I have an 8'8" longer "hull" type of board. I have a 10" flex fin with almost 6" base on it and would go with less depth, but the tail is 16.5" and I ride it with the fin's trailing edge about 1 foot up. this makes a 10" fin depth almost necessary. My personal opinion is that alot of the drive comes from surfing the board on its straighter rail line instead of depending on a fin and pivoting off a heavily rockered tail. Also, the bottom shape of "hull" boards with the flat area behind the fin makes me feel lots of drive behind my backfoot when I go into and out of a turn...just my personal opinion. Good luck

seems like a bit too much fin at 10" for a 9’ hull. you may get more drive but run the risk of fin dominatiing the board. perhaps rocker scheme is not what it should be? i run  9.5" liddle flex in all my hulls between 8-9’. not quite 6" of base. rememember,  much of hull riding is using the rail so a whole lot of fin is not needed.

what is the base width on your 9.5's

5.5" up to 6" ( 9" flex fin with 6" base= good drive without dominating the board)
