Griffin gets more raves

This is way worthy of a thread-cop–Swaylocker, five hand-foiled fins of G10, flat bottom, clear glass, Sunset backdrop…

YEAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

This is the most fun I’ve had in quite a while. Unfortunately Doug injured his back and had to sell this board.

This board rules. I’ve been wanting a Griffin since I demo’d the two he sent out to cali. The yellow quad really didnt do that much for me (for reasons i’ll get into in a minute) but the 5 fin piqued my interest. The board i rode was too small and didnt really have enough volume to accomodate my 6’1 205lb frame but it had a couple flashes of brilliance.

When I saw Dougs for sale I jumped on it as the dims seemed much closer to what i would order. When I first took it out of the bag I was a bit skeptical…“.what no concaves???”…“shit…thats a lot of fin area…is this board going to be stiff?”

well the short answer was no. from the second i hit the water the borad felt great under my chest…it paddled very well, but would i be able to surf it? my first session was in 2ft afternoon low tide closeouts. I’ve never been a good small wave surfer, part of it is due to my size and the other part is pure lack of talent. I didnt really get any good waves with an open face but i did notice the boards ability go accelerate and maintain speed. i seemed when i went into the soup where most boards woud kind of float on top of the whitewater and kind of stall this board would hook up and boom you’d be right in the pocket with speed to spare. Since I didnt have a leash (and i suck in small waves) after a couple of swims i called it a day and was really looking forward to better condtions.

2nd session was this morning, 1-3 left glassy morning peelers…a little bit soft with the tide but lots of potential for fun. I wasnt dissapointed. the first thing i noticed is that as soon as you start dropping into the wave the fins release and immediately do can pump/drive. it feels like you are getting a head start on the wave. with the boards ive been riding the last few years, while the boards are super fast fun i feel them hang up slightly on the drop an take a second to loosen up and release.

this board absolutely flies and is as nimble/agile as a shortboard. you can whip it around/go verticle on a whim…its really remarkable. the most incredible thing is you dont lose any speed when doing it. this is the best design for my style of surfing yet. it only took me about 2 waves to get this board figured out…dare i say its a magic board?

CAtoFLtoCA showed up about an hour later and he got on the Griff and although i cant speak for him i think he was impressed and had a pretty good time. both of us are bigger guys and had no problem in the smaller surf.

i really think this is an underrated design and after today i am a big believer in Griffins G-10 fins. The proof is in the pudding… As it turns out the quad i rode didnt have “his” fins in it and thats why it didnt work liek it should. I’ts akin to taking a swept wing fighter like and f-14 and putting 737 fixed wings on it…will it fly…yes, but it’s not meant to be.

Anyone who wants to meet up for a surf is welcome take it for a ride, i an fully drinking the kool aid.

i love this board, seriously… thanks griff suffering through all the bullshit and continuing to refine you ideas.

Yup, Grifs the man.

Its too bad about the glassing sitch.

I think this year is going to be his year…

I can sense it coming

the buzz at least…

one man

five fins

great boards

core surfing

I have the glassing sorted out and have 2 really good caring glassers to work with now.

The blanks are finally here to make my stock boards and i will begin next week if i can finalize my logo for printing. Its been just 4 months since my wifes passing and this is good progress.

I hope to be in San Diego in 2 months for my first shaping trip.

Greg
