While sitting here wasting time on the intermanet, i overhead the News reader mention something about someone "revolutionising" surfing. Turns out its tom wegener, and his GSI alaia aka "sea tuna". They interviewed him and everything. Never thought i'd see alaia's make the national news !.
They did do a close up of the rails in the tail, very hard edges on both the bottom, and the deck.
Anything involving GSI is a sell out and hurts true handshapers ( even those who use a local CNC machine to fill "Model" orders). All the big names that you see in the Mags'n'Media go that way eventually. Pure $$$$$$$$$$$$
Wegner woke up one morning and said to himself; "If I can hype this wooden board crap thru my media conections, I may get the recognition and $$$$$$$$$$$ dollars I deserve. If your into nostalgia; cool! Otherwise there is nothing revolutionary about an Alaia. Those wooden boards are just a trip down "Memory Lane". His brother shapes a nice retro longboard but, Have you ever seen a foam (short or long) board shaped by Tom Wegner It's like the Joel Tudor crap. They are both good surfers who could ride an ironing board if they had to. Are they shapers ? Hell NO! But everybody's gotta make a living some how.
So I went to the GSI web site to read about this revolutionary alaia aka and what a bunch of crap !! They pass Tom Wagener off as a surf historian ! Give me a brake I listened to both videos and he can't even pronounce alaia correctly (Ah lay a ) I don't think so brother Wagener, thats not how. If your going to push something Hawaiian the least you can do is learn to talk the talk ! On second thought I think Ill go to GSI with my CLC Kaholo and get them to promote that Kook box wich of course I would have ripped off from CLC ! Then I could be famous just like Tom W and ROY S !!!!
I tell ya; I stand by my comments made above about Wegner and Tudor. I would only add that if you want to ride an Alaia (A-ly-a), get some pine or redwood from Home Depot and make your own. But don't pass up good waves on a good board to take a trip down memory lane. Wegner's an attorney; he can always pass the bar Down Under, and put on a wig to support his Aussie wife and kids. Tudor's never worked a day in his life so he'll be able to get 99 weeks of unemployment and several exstensions as long as he keeps voting for Der Fuehur.
