Guest book board

In july im geting married and im planning to do shape a small board for all the guests to sign and decorate as our guest book that we can then put on the wall as a nice memory of our day.

The plan is something relativly small and fairly flat so it doesnt take up too much room and sits nice on the wall, im thinking simmonds or a classic single fin. Im not sure yet if its going to be best to get the guest to sign the blank or weather to glass it first and then sign it and maybe gloss it after.  Im trying to think what colour would be good to do so that it doesnt fade or show the yellowing as it ages and what pens ect to use that will be most guest frendy on the day, posca, sharpe ect ect as i  dont want people to go smudgeing what others have done.

im guessing others may have done this or similar before so looking for sugestions and ideas on what works best or how to make it a cool as posable for as long as posable and so we have something we can tresure for ever.

many thanks

Just my 2 cents.  Why not have the guests sign a piece rice paper, then lame those pieces to your shaped blank.  It would ease your concerns about smudging, and denting a shaped blank.  If someone messes up they can simply sign a new piece of paper instead of screwing up the blank.

cheers yes thats not a bad idea perhaps looses a bit of the personality but like you say would avoid disasters.

yeah the rice paper is a good idea, maybe maltiple pieces so if they stuff up you got spares.

Maybe light mist it onto some paper/cardboard with glue so it’s easy to work with for the guests. Make it fancy looking and put it on their tables you might come out with some pretty cool things.

Then you could make the board whatever size you want (and put their wedding pic in the middle) haha coffffeeeee is gooood

i like the idea of having some sheets on the table it would give them time to do something more creative although it may be alcahol fueled

we are a bit limited on size due to the wall i want to put it on i think i can squeez something in the high 5’s on there.

does posca  or sharpie work on rice paper?

I don’t understand… Alcohol = good

Post some pictures when it’s done.

will do any sugestions for colour i guess if i do the rice paper i cant use white pens very easy so would have to be a pail colour, i was wondering about a very light coffie colour tint, the other half said pale blue tint but i think that may get a little old with time.

Surfrider Foundation has the sign the surfboard petition going around.  Maybe you could get some input from them.  It appears to have wood veneer skins.  Seems like the ink would bleed if the wood is signed without first being sealed.

I do a ton of these “signature surfboards”.  Right now, I do a 3’ x 10" x 1.10" EPS/epoxy board.  I print all the logos up on rice paper.  I have everyone sign the boards with acylic pens on the sanded hot coat. I later give it a clear spary finish or a PE gloss finish.

I have the boards sit at the receptionist table with wipes so the people signing the board can clean their hands prior to signing. Wedding planers love this idea.

I have a local foam company cut up the blanks with my rockers.  It comes out to around $16 a blank.  I’ll attach a few smples of my boards to give you an idea.

Here a few more samples.

ok so i have nearly finnished the board ( i get married tomorow so has to be ready tonight!)

i went for a light toffie colour tint and plan to use black posca to get people to sign it. Im just wondereing what grit to leave it at for the pens to work the best.

The other thing i want to do is put some pin lines around it but i have never done them before so wondering what is the most full proof method i can do tonight!.

i guess i need to try and keep the guests hands nice and clean and not greasey so was going to provide wipes and allso maybe a hair dryer so they can dry the art work before the next person.

any other tips would be good.

Many thanks

sounds like you glassed it already since you mention pinlines?  If glassed I would sand at least to 220 or 320 if you have time, posca ink will run into scratches any lower grit than that.

what he said.

Posca pen the pinlines. Then lightly seal with acrylic clear… This will keep others from rubbing them off when handling.  Once they are finished signing just gloss like normal.

cheers guys yes its all glassed toffie brown tint with cut lap, im at 320 at the moment i will give it a quick blast with 400 to be sure.  I wanted to do a cream pin line, im not sure im going to get time to do it anyway now so may just run some tape and tell people to stay within the lines. could i use U-Pol clear to seal the art work as people go and still gloss over it?

I wouldn’t do it without testing it first. But beyond that, the stuff REEKS and would surely drive away anyone looking it sign the thing… Atleast that was my experience with that stuff.
