I’m going to be making the annual family pilgramage to Hanalei, I normally paddle out in front of the Pricetville Hotel (summer break some people call it), but last summer it started to break in the bay a little bit. Any locals on here think it will be breaking, if you dont wanna say I can’t blame you. Aloha
Not a local, not even close…have been there only 3 trips.
But it breaks when the NorthShoreOahu breaks, even mid summer.
When the swells come from NE, which would be considered NW here in SFrancisco, it gets in. Some summers are full of NW swell. This summer have seen very little, even with the strong NW winds we had last month.
3 weeks ago, most of the NorthShore was breaking around 1.5 overhead. Bet Hanalei got some, as did Middles, why so slows, Kaleheiwai (sp), Tunnels and Cannons.
Average rate of breaking in summer months…about 4 days a month, head high.
last summer was so fun, i’m bringing a fish in case, but i end up using my log most of the time
My experiences with Hanalei on trips there during the summer months have been of flatness. Your chances arent so great during this time of the year but there are freak NW swells during the summer months. There always seems to be some surf at Anahola, though a bit mushy due to the prevailing trades. I once lucked out on a hurricane swell on the east side and surfed Horner’s. I really considered myself lucky because we were staying right there too. The normal easterly trades backed off and conditions were excellent. What noramally was a sloppy, mushy break, was now a hollow, peeling left. After the swell dropped, I made the long drive to the southwest side to surf my favorite break there.
ambrose?
bring your boards… you might get luckey. if not, you drive to the other side. It’s the middle of summer.
A hanalei is not mine to sell out…ask the surf report or quick silver or bilabong they bought it from the guys that could be bought, stop in at my house Ill take you surfing near my house its always soul satisfing junk. and occasionally wow geewhiz, after I meet you and surf with you I can recomend a spot or spots that will be compatible with your level of development… techniquely and spiritually…I’m not the guy to be held responsible for sending non swimmers out to drown at niagra falls but I can paddle out with you and know you much better when we get back to the beach…I would be interested to see when the Owners of hanalei choose to publish the guide in renovaters supply, rebuilding it in their own image renaming spots etc. the tahitians did it too when they came hundreds of years ago too … ambrose… I sneak into hanalei…and try not to divulge my knowing of hanalei , in the biblical sense, we have shared intimate moments that are too cherished to cheapen with an instruction booklet for great —…I know the guy who named tennis shoes and chicken wing,… KIM HARP… he died and was scattered at hanalei almost thirty years ago…Jerry Lynn showed me the line-up for the flat rock…he died this year…If I meet up with these guys in an afterlife I wanna look’em straight in the eye an say… it wasn’t me…they might give me a wave at the new spot
are you descended from the newport rats? or Mat the rat or mark the rat gerbinski… and which point are you a rat at ??? Dana, ledbetters, rnincon de Baja, that place outside scammons lagoon the more cherished info you trade the more you might value the information you get…how bout jordan river or ralphs at balast point…or the army peir inside fort point or a picture at 5’ aquatic park getting barreled on a mat…I was a beach rat at Coyote point and visited the junior museum with Tom Ostrander…P.B. to some in the KNOW…he surfed the point before rat-boy was a… …ambrose…proud of my name and my qu irks
ambrose, i would be really stoked to have a surf with you, ill be there late august to early september, as the date nears closer ill let you know. and i didnt mean to rattle any bones
Howzit Brother Brose, Ever wonder how the chicken wing at Hanalei ended up the break outside Middles, I do. Kim was a great surfer and I stopped and saw him and the family when they were living on the Parker strip before he died. Aloha, Kokua
Howzit point rat, Summer break was 4 ft day before yesterday and Tunnels has been a little bigger. Just around the corner from S.B. a swimmer drowned at Queen's Bath yesterday. One thing about Summer break is there's a man in an EX LG gray suit that keeps the crowd under control. Aloha, Kokua
whenever i surfed at summer break it was mostly the tourist crowd from the princeton hotel, there were a few people that lived in hanalei though, and they were usually really nice. Last summer I caught it breaking in front of the river mouth out on one of the reefs (inside reef i guess), I’m not sure of the name of the reef but it was peeling for 100-200 yards, the last ride was the longest and it was so dark I couldn’t see anything but it kept going until i almost got stuck in a fishing line off the pier. i hope my glass-ons survive the flight
Howzit point rat, sounds like you scored some little Bowl waves, now and then a little swell will sneak in during the summer. Alas it is flat today except for some ankle snappers on the reef at Waikokos. Keep in touch and let me know when you are coming to Kauai. Aloha, Kokua
Bowls, what a wave. At a little over head it is a dream come true for an old fart like me. I love to watch the ladys nose ride the inside. That is almost as good as riding the wave myself. When it sucks over and the fish do not even know what is going on, and they come flying out of the wave at you and you don’t know weather to s$*t or go blind. I’m on my way. I will be there in Sept. myself. Ambrose I need a board. Can you help? Maybe the spot out side your place will be working and I can try one of those 12 footers, I would enjoy surfing that spot with you again. Good times Goods waves.
So much for coffins across the point at Whorers, heh Ambrose? HD McDing
Harpo was the prince of the coffin at a hanalei…usually after dark, the nose tweak was the order of the day in daylight…theres a place called Horners, after the former site of the Horner’s mansion at wailua is this what you allude to ?..Alex Dias was the king of the coffin they called him dracula at the huntington contest ,he wore a full wetsuit, and made the finals with Kit Horn more than once…they were really old in 1965…maybe as old as us now…there is so much more than three dimensions to this…ambrose…not greg …a finely executed coffin take off followed by a coffin bottom turn…and trim behind the guy that took off in front of me and to finally straighten off as the wave closed out to the bowl and figer tip tweedle waving to the guy as he looked left to see I was trailing him so closly and all on my back is my cherished memory of the hanalei coffin…oh yea it was not small…I was so much older then I’m younger than that now…are you talking about higher coffin studies? Mr. Mc D?
