I must have had a brain fart and not seen the novice part. yes pounders and sandys are dangerous Shallow shorebreak.
I will also say that if you and your son are not strong swimmers, Point panic is a bit of a swim out into the open water with swell rolling in,
FYI… both Sandys and Makapuu are not for novices. Many people get hurt badly there every year. If you have surfed the Wedge at Newport, no problem.
When Makapuu is up, it has a mean rip. When Sandys is up, you can break your neck. Pounders will slam you onto the sand like Sandys when it’s up.
Makaha can be a fun and safe place to bodysurf. There’s a place called Sherwoods on the East side that is also a great place for body surfing, not that far from Makapuu.
Wherever you go be careful about leaving valuables in the car or on the beach. Just be careful to spend some time watching and talk to the life guards before going out.

Hey Sparx,
Saw a guy with a hand plane this morning in the Ala Moana Bowls zone. Was that you? Kinda rare to see a bodysurfer out there. With the Hawaii Five-0 production crew taking up half the parking lot…not too crowded with lots of overhead waves and although the tide was a bit high…the conditions were sweet.
Exhausted but stoked…

Aside from the already great mentions I had a ton of fun at Sandy beach and Pounders when i was just on Oahu.
I’ve always been a fan of Makapu’u.
sparx, great handplanes, lovely wood combos..
Proneman, the last pic is like the first page of a book....The sparkle off the water, the colours of the deep, the anticipation of the water temp...
I felt like I was there, jogging down the steps, board in hand, ready to paddle out....
hoping that guy in front wouldnt get in my way !
Point Panic on south shore Oahu…supposed to be body surfing only and a new swell arriving on Monday!

It is west of the Ala Moana Beach Park…at the end of Ward Ave. Plenty of parking and convienent steps into the water…probably lower tide is better…
