Has anyone surfed St. Kitts?

Hola, hello, aloha!

Just wondering if anyone has surfed St. Kitts or St. Marteen islands, will be taking a cruise in a couple of weeks and haven’t surfed or don’t know anyone who has surfed those two islands. The other destinations the cruise travels to I know my way around: (St. Thomas, Barbados and St. Lucia) but looking at St. Kitts from Google Earth it looks like it has some good point and bays…

Guess you will have to give a report on what you find. Then again if you find something really interesting...... Would you really want to say anything?

Artz, check out the NW coast of the island on Google Earth, looks like point break heaven. I guess not many surfers travel to St. Kitts to surf, most people who plan a trip to the Caribbean go to Puerto Rico or Barbados so I guess that if there are good spots they wont get crowded unless we write an article with photos on Surfer or Surfline but yea, the swaylocks community is made up of mostly cool good vibe people and I will keep you posted no problem.

Puerto Rico....

There is a left point there, just over the jungle (easy 1/2 mile walk) from SevenSeas, that looks like Ross's Cove in HMB, just inside and N of Mavericks.

I saw it at around 12' in Dec last year, nobody in the surf town 11 miles W heard of it, and neither did the 3 guys working in the surf shop there (Luhillo).

Unfortunately, I'd need 8' gun to locate the takeoff spot, as it'd be a solo session and the beach is too steep for anyone but an experienced big wave surfer...not me.

  Heading there in 4 days.

Tony,

Don’t post any information after you visit.  But, you can PM me all the info because I can keep a secret.  (;    Mike

Sent you a pm… I re read your post afterwards again and got that you didn’t surf the spot, some of my favorite waves in the island are hidden around the NE coast, when there is swell most people head West to Aguadilla and Rincón, I like heading to the opposite direction jejeje… If you are a shortboarder coming here in winter, pack at least a 7’ mini gun (or bigger if you want to surf Tres Palmas)in your quiver, some people call Puerto Rico the Hawaii of the Caribbean and there are high probabilities you will encounter well overhead waves. Currently the Atlantic high is not permitting the lows to enter in  NW angle so we have some NE swells packed with lots of NE winds, you need to wake up early for a chance at some SE winds or look for protected spots.

  Thanks Tony...

Unfortunately, I haven't surfed in 2 years now.  I'm 63, and windsurf mostly nowadaze.

I did USE to surf the biggest rideable days at OceanBeach in SanFrancisco, Wiamea (not Pinballs), Sunset, and lots of days at Pipe, but am not in shape to really surf anymore.

Worse, my g/f is an impatient windsurf only person, who tried surfing at tiny IslaVerde and had trouble getting up last year.  She big girl.

Aloha Lee, I am sure you will have lots of fun anyway, lots of things to do besides surfing. If you want to go fishing, book a charter directly with the captain and not through the hotel in Fajardo as they charge a lot more for exactly the same boat and captain. Check out www.billwrapsfishingpr.com

My friend Captain Iglesias runs a genuine legally operated fishing charter and I would totally recommend it to anyone as not only does he offer great service, he is a very professional and experienced fisherman and can take you out to catch some blue water fish…

Man I wish that when I reach your age (I am 35) I can log as much time in those waves you mentioned. I have surfed Ocean Beach S.F. though and it’s a heavy wave, much respect Lee…

Contact me if you need any information about anything in Puerto Rico, I was born here and have lived here all my life.

Thanks for the aloha and good vibes.

Hope we can have dinner when I"m in PR.

Are you closer to Fajardo or to SanJuan?

As I mentioned, g/f owns one apartment in that white complex overlooking SevenSeas beach.

Anywhere is near in the island. I live in San Juan with wife and kid but am always traveling around the island as I am a real estate appraiser. Yea, would love to hear some of those big wave stories.

  It's all ancient history.

I go down to the beach nowadaze and recognise only a handful of old timers, unless the surf is really big or really good.

Always weird to go into WiseSurfboards, where I hung out and worked for 20 years....just an uncomfortable feel.  Of course, all the guys there recognize me as I walk in, which makes it wierd, because I quit surfing in 1985.  I still surfed 50 days a year since, until 3 years ago.

Oh, we took g/f Dad's Whaler out to the nearest low islands E of Fajardo, the low one with mosquitos.  Found a really nice setup there, but E winds on the surf side were onshore, causing both left points to section and fold ahead of itself.  Swell was about 4' there, more like 2' at the launch in Fajardo.

Kitts has two right points on the NW of the island.  St Martin has a right point at the north point.  Wind is almost always offshore on all three.  Some other breaks around too.

Awesome Greg, mahalo! Have you surfed the Caribbean? I know you are one of the big wave guys and look up to you, hope your new knees get good soon! Aloha!

Thanks greg, great info. I'll have to look up flights to St Kitts.
