has water leaked in?

i finally got around to fixing a few dings i had patched up with some suncure a while back. i thought i had done a water-tight job but i just got a little unnerved when i just went to repair it. i found it kind of mushy bond between the glass and foam around the board. in other words, i was able to apply pressure with my thumb to the glass and push in. i’ve never really tried that before but something felt off, so i did…maybe it’s normal.

i’m just wondering how easy it should be to push in on the glass and it give a little. should it be rock solid to a thumb push weight. it certainly didn’t push in easy but with enough weight behind it, it did.

how do you tell if water’s gotten into the foam??

Sounds like water did get in. Is it browning? That’s the down side of those quick fix products. That’s why when ever a ding exposes or accesses foam, I like to fill, glass, sand, hot coat and feather sand and polish. Doing this, the board will last longer and the re-sale value is better.

doesn’t seem to be browning. as i said i’m not sure if water got in or if it’s normal to be able to apply enough pressure to push in the glass a tiny bit?

We could be talking about a de-Lam here. There could be a gap between the foam and the glass. I would play it safe and fix it. With UV cure resin, repairs are so much faster.

To me it sounds like an air bubble/delam. Like the previous poster said take the safe option and fix it. Better safe than sorry.

here’s one of the cracks/dings after i’ve sanded most of the suncure off it. what would you guys recommend to do here? take that strip of glass off and reglass, sand/gloss?

Yup, I’d recommend building a new board.

No harm in fixing that one, but you should build a new one, because it’s more fun than doing ding repair!!

I would use 80 grit sandpaper to sand away any protruding fibreglass. Tape off around the area with masking tape and then use laminating resin and filler (about peanut butter thickness) to fill along the crack. Use an icecream stick to spread it and smooth it out. Run your icecream stick 90 degrees to the length of the ding also running it along the length of the crack that way the icecream stick won’t “fall in” to your dent. Sand with 80 grit once it’s dry so the area is nice and smooth. Adding a layer of cloth after this probably wouldn’t hurt but it’s really up to you after this I think.

haha, good call keith. i’d love to make a new one but sadly i’m a college kid with very limited amounts of money. i’m saving up for some supplies soon though but i’d definetly like to get this board fixed up. it looks worse in the photo than it is i think…there’s no dent or anything…its more like a tear in the glass.
