Have I just destroyed my sons board?

My son and I decided to paint the bottom of his pride and joy.

Krylon fusion gloss spray paint with a brush on overcoat of “Ding all” expoxy

Gave the surface of the board (the bottom) a REALLY good cleaning, soap and water, thorough rinse, light sanding the entire thing with 200 grit. It was definately good prep.

taped and painted, so far so good, looked great, lightly sanded the lines with wet-dry, looked super. Son went back to college and I was just going to put the expoxy coat and voila…

Went to brush on the epoxy top coat and I noticed immediately when I was brushing on that it was pulling away from some sections. Since there was nothing I could do at that point I just soldiered on, hoping could sand it out after.

When I went to sand with 180 grit, random orbital sander, VERY lightly, a section burned through and immediately a piece of expoxy lifted up. I stuck a sheetrock knife under and lifted up a 3’ section. All of the epoxy is just peeling off, painted and non painted sections.

Questions:

  1. On the painted sections: why did it pull away?

  2. on the non-painted section, is epoxy supposed to just peel off like that?

Lot of work ruined, what did I do wrong?

thanks

Is the board polyester resin?  when you say the epoxy came off in sheets, it sounded like a familiar symptom.

You have some work to do, but it can be saved.  Clean it, sand it lightly, and wipe on a few thin layers of Behr concrete sealer.  Check the archives for details of how to apply.

all the best

So, the guy that sold us the board said it was epoxy, shame on me for not knowing the difference by looking at it I guess.

thanks for the advice.

Bummer for sure. Epoxy doesn’t do well in that application. I use the Krylon clear coat over the paint and it works every time. How to fix? I don’t think there is any fix since the mechanical bond failed. Sand everything off and start over. Or… If the art is priceless, laminate a full layer of glass then hotcoat and sand like a new build. BUT… don’t do that.
. Btw, it shouldn’t matter if it is polyester resin under the paint.

You sealed the board with the paint… epoxy had nothing to achieve a mechanical bond to.

Same principle as if you put wax paper on your kitchen counter and poured epoxy on that. … it’s not gonna stick to your counter.

Doesn’t matter if it’s poly or epoxy glass .
